I agree.  If it doesn't clear, you resell it and you're only out the time it would take to see if the check is legit.

He got it for only $399. It went for MUCH less than I thought it would sell for. I thought it would go for at least $500. Oh well you win some and you loose some.

I wouldn't ship anything until funds have cleared and show in your account. In this case cost plus shipping up front. Getting jacked around also has an additional fee. Don't understand this mentality of buying an item and expecting the seller/purchasing agent to run down payment. It is a live and learn thing but total BS in the meantime.

He is arranging shipping himself. I don't have to do anything. So that is a plus. But I totally agree about waiting for payment. I have a bad feeling that I am going to get a personal check in the mail. If that happens what do you all think I should do? If it is a personal check should I just send it back to him and Keep the cooler? Or should I cash it and hold it for a certain amount of time? How long should it be held before I let the cooler go? Once the money is in the bank can they take it back if the check is bad?

It's customary to wait 10 days for a check to clear, I'd wait at LEAST that long.

I guess it depends hoe  bad and how fast you need the cash.  At this point, it's all in your hands, the bank can tell you how long it would take to clear, I've heard up to tw weeks for money orders, checks usually  less than 10 days/  
I wouldn't let the cooler go until the bank confirms the funds are in your account. ucks to be him if he has to reschedule .  He can wait for a change, maybe  modify that hot air balloon Chumley  and whats his name bought into a zeppelin

He said he wanted it picked up in the next week maximum and I don't even have a check yet. That sounds fishy. I will make him wait 2 weeks. We could use the money but its not that big of a deal. I can wait two weeks. I will not let it go for two weeks. I bet he will get pissed but oh well. What happens if his guys come to get it and I don't let it go. I bet he will demand his money back.
