The penalties for "forging" bank check is far worse than the $400 machine.. Cashiers checks are guaranteed, aren't they?? I really don't think its a concern...

You can call Chase on an 800 number (usually printed on the check) - ask to verify the funds or validity of the Cashiers Check - you need to do this before depositing the check as they will ask you for all the pertinent numbers off the check (i.e. check number, account number, etc.).
If it is a personal check, they will verify if funds are CURRENTLY in the account.
For a Cashiers Check, they can verify the validity of the check. He can cancel the Cashiers Check, but not after you've deposited it.

Josh, I can understand your concerns and hopefully everyone has learned something from this. Doubt anyone is dumb enough to forge a Chase document. Get scans or photocopies before you deposit. Follow Tom's advice and you should be fine. $400 is a darn good price and who knows the truck may never show up. Please post how this all shakes out.

If it is a Chase Cashiers Check, you should be able to cash it over the counter at any Chase bank.  They will verifiy the authenticity of the check before they negotiate it.  They may charge you a check cashing fee if you do not have an account but that might be worth it to have your cash immediately.  Just a thought from an ex-banker.
