Any chance that those of use with flatbed scanners might be able to create files from them? Maybe start a reference library on this site?

I think that is a great idea. The ones that dr Galaga asked for are spoken for. I don't want any money for the manuals but I do ask that you pay shipping and if you are able please scan these and make them available to others. I know how much certain manuals have helped me in the past so I just hope these might help someone sometime. although some of them are rather odd machines.

I actually asked the question about starting a library a few months back, but it just kind of laid there. However, I think it would be a great idea. When you scan these manuals, it creates files larger than we are allowed to post. So, my thought at the time was to see if there was a way to scan the file, send it to a "library moderator" (Jim or some one he approves of), and have it posted. The moderator would have to have posting privileges of large file sizes. That way, we could get the info out and still not flood the site with large graphic files.
I personally have the following manuals and would be happy to share with everyone. I can scan them (some are already in electronic format) and send to you via email (use waynestrine@yahoo.com for requests):
Vendo 23 Manual (already in .pdf format) Cavalier 51 Manual (already in .pdf format) Vendo Vari-Price Coin Mech Coinco 9800 Manual National Slug Rejectors Manual (already in .pdf format)
I'll check to see if I have any more.

Regarding manuals becoming free domain on SMC...
Eric and I had a brief discussion on this and my thoughts are: Due to the people attempting to earn a small living from reproduction parts, manuals, and other various supplies for soda machine/cooler restorations, I'm not sure how receptive this idea would be taken since a small slice of "their", Parts Suppliers, inventory is to become free domain on the internet... Any thoughts are definately welcome!
My personal opinion is that it's a great idea and can easily be incorporated into the Discussion Areas.

I don't think it would be a problem. Those companies selling the manuals probably don't have permission from the manufacturers anyway. Besides we have a swap meet area and that potientially hurts them as well. I don't think it would be a big deal. If we were wanting to sell them that would be another thing. It is kind of like the Napster issue. If they complain just remove the manuals that they sell and leave the others. Over time the members here will collect a bunch of manuals that those places don't sell. Just like 90% of the ones I found are not sold anywhere.

I now work for a large vending machine manufacturer and we already have started to post our service manuals online. Right now we only have our more recent models posted, but I believe the plan is to post the older models as time permits.

I was wondering when someone was going to bring up the issue that Jim brought up. Kind of funny how different hobbies do things differently. It is very easy to find most arcade video game manuals online, but it is real hard to find any soda machine or jukebox manuals online. Here's my two possible fixes: Option #1 - Post the non-"hot" machine manuals. Leave the Vendo 63's and Cavalier 64's for the big guys, but offer the other items on-line. Option #2 - Have the manuals available only to those who are signed in, and don't have the option "public" for guests. This doesn't mean that all the manuals will be kept on the SMC server (eating up space and bandwidth). I was going to post the manuals that I get on my Comcast account. I have a lot of space that I am not using there - and it's free!

Good to see a healthy discussion. I have a flat bed scanner. I have OCR (optical character recognition) software. If the idea is accepted, I would suggest that the manuals be saved in .pdf format (everyone can get Adobe Reader free) with just the diagram portions as images. That should allow for the smallest file sizes. I have done several similar projects for US Customs now Customs and Border Protection, Department of Homeland Security. Translated that means I would volunteer to be part of the project. My is Bill Gurk (thus the wgurk login) and I can be verified with DHS at Miami Int'l where i am assigned. The team I am part of staffs the Foreign Mail Center and 4 courier stations around the airport. From 0800-1600 hours you are welcome to call 305-526-2102 and speak to a supervisor or anyone and verify my employment. Or 305-871-4177 for the supervisors office at one of the stations. I can personaly be reached at 305-871-2106 from 1400-2200 Tuesday through Saturday. Now time to go and finish preparing for the hurricane. Be watching the posts to see what is decided.

Jim - I think posting them would be fine. Selling them might get you into hot water. Like Josh said, I doubt that anybody selling manuals actually has rights to do so... It's a low volume niche market and unlikely to grab much attention from anyone.

Things were a little crazy with moving. I know I owe Eric the stoner manual but please remind me if I have forgotten anyone. Does anyone else want any of these manuals? I am going to start throwing some away soon. Some of the 70's cup vendor manuals I don't think anyone will need.

All I need is for people to send me their address and I will get them out. I just want them to help other people but I don't have the ability to scan or even know how to do anything with this stuff. Heck I even have a website that I don't know how to maintain and my website guy bailed on me. Oh well.

I got power back a couple of days ago. DSL yesterday I believe it was. There are some manuals that should already be on the way. No telephone, it went the wrong way, they say by the evening of the 16th it should be corrected. I will begin on the manuals as soon as they arrive. Can send the scanned files via the internet back to the site. And will burn copies of the files to CD or DVD based on size of files and space needed. Will mail them back with the manuals when done. Hows that for an update. Nice to have something positive to report.

Dr Galaga, thanks for the kind words. This last manual is going to take a few days. Between the age, water damage, and 155 or so pages, it will be a project and a half. If you guys and gals can bear with me, I will more than happy to keep working on any and all that you would like to put online here. Glad you like them.

The manuals that I bought a while back are just about scanned. 1000 pages takes a bit longer (actually alot longer) than I ever expected. I have divided by chapters. The problem is that the pages do not lie completely flat thus requiring more attention than a sugared up toddler. Just when I feel confident it will be fine it jams. At least I have a front back option so that does help. '>

Hello all,
Just to bring you up to speed with Josh's brochure/manuals; He's going to snail mail them to me so I can scan infomration for SMC. Once this task is completed, I'll post back to everyone and mail the information to the next person interested...
In thinking further, this could be a good candidate for the Soda Jerk Section...
