Regarding manuals becoming free domain on SMC...

Eric and I had a brief discussion on this and my thoughts are:
Due to the people attempting to earn a small living from reproduction parts, manuals, and other various supplies for soda machine/cooler restorations, I'm not sure how receptive this idea would be taken since a small slice of "their", Parts Suppliers, inventory is to become free domain on the internet... Any thoughts are definately welcome!

My personal opinion is that it's a great idea and can easily be incorporated into the Discussion Areas.

My six cents,

I don't think it would be a problem. Those companies selling the manuals probably don't have permission from the manufacturers anyway. Besides we have a swap meet area and that potientially hurts them as well. I don't think it would be a big deal. If we were wanting to sell them that would be another thing. It is kind of like the Napster issue. If they complain just remove the manuals that they sell and leave the others. Over time the members here will collect a bunch of manuals that those places don't sell. Just like 90% of the ones I found are not sold anywhere.

I'd like to take a look at the stoner manual and see if I could scan and clean it up.....
Maybe bring it to the show in Chicago when we meet up
Thanks

Eric. I would be glad to give it to you if you want it but it has been wet for a long time and alot of the pages have fused together. It is also to the later one piece stoners like I posted before.

I now work for  a large vending machine manufacturer and we already have started to post our service manuals online. Right now we only have our more recent models posted, but I believe the plan is to post the older models as time permits.

I was wondering when someone was going to bring up the issue that Jim brought up.  Kind of funny how different hobbies do things differently.  It is very easy to find most arcade video game manuals online, but it is real hard to find any soda machine or jukebox manuals online.
Here's my two possible fixes:
Option #1 - Post the non-"hot" machine manuals.  Leave the Vendo 63's and Cavalier 64's for the big guys, but offer the other items on-line.
Option #2 - Have the manuals available only to those who are signed in, and don't have the option "public" for guests.  This doesn't mean that all the manuals will be kept on the SMC server (eating up space and bandwidth).  I was going to post the manuals that I get on my Comcast account.  I have a lot of space that I am not using there - and it's free!

Good to see a healthy discussion.  I have a flat bed scanner. I have OCR (optical character recognition) software.  If the idea is accepted, I would suggest that the manuals be saved in .pdf format (everyone can get Adobe Reader free) with just the diagram portions as images.  That should allow for the smallest file sizes.  I have done several similar projects for US Customs now Customs and Border Protection, Department of Homeland Security.  Translated that means I would volunteer to be part of the project.    My is Bill Gurk (thus the wgurk login) and I can be verified with DHS at Miami Int'l where i am assigned.  The team I am part of staffs the Foreign Mail Center and 4 courier stations around the airport.  From 0800-1600 hours you are welcome to call 305-526-2102 and speak to a supervisor or anyone and verify my employment.  Or 305-871-4177 for the supervisors office at one of the stations.  I can personaly be reached at 305-871-2106 from 1400-2200 Tuesday through Saturday.  Now time to go and finish preparing for the hurricane.  Be watching the posts to see what is decided.
