The Price of Gas

Paid $2.89 in NJ on 5/14 always fill up there prices are much lower than here in NY

Well I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that is   '>  off
 about the price of gas, Now they say up in Washington  that the price
will come back down  A LITTLE (yeah right    ) ,
 They are going to start production  back up
   '>  ( something I think should be running
 full time )  Anyways Just was wondering what some of the price's were out there and  to see how you guy's feel about this.

Everyone's talking about solutions and boycotts of oil companies, and or don't buy gas days,etc... not sure any of this would work... what has to happen without getting too political. It just sucks! '>

Here in Maryland, I am paying $2.97.  I could be wrong, but I believe one of the main problems is there hasn't been a new refinery built in the US in about 30 years (probably due to environmentalists).  The supply of oil is fine.  It's just the refineries can't produce enough to have a good stockpile to keep prices down.

I get a newsletter from an association we belong to at work, and they had an article about gas prices....

Don't need to build a refinery if we don't have oil
to refine. Environmentalists are keeping us from our
own supplies. I think they should try to work with our
oil companies........rather than against them.
        I will be voting for a next president that will stand
up to this group! I'm sure we can compromise, maybe
move some Elk herds ..... or disguise some off-shore
wells.
        
        Also we the taxpayers have spent a bundle of our
money to liberate an oil-rich country. Maybe  we and all the nations who participated with us should get re-imbursed in the form of crude oil rather than cash?

Some guy on the radio this morning was basically telling the US to quit whining about the price of gas, as it costs so much in Europe.  My beef with that is the difference in size of the US versus the developed European nations make that comparison moot.  The convenience and usage of public transportation over there is far superior to ours, but, again, the layout/land area has a lot to do with that.

I agree with Glen that the tree-huggers need to let us drill for our own stuff.  We still need more refineries.  Our population has increased and has become more commuter-oriented, while the capacity to produce gasoline has not increased at even a comparable rate.  The refineries we have now are working at nearly 100% capacity, so even with more oil, they still couldn't refine it any quicker.  Plus, if one goes off line (as in Hurricane Katrina), the others cannot pick up the slack, as they can't produce any more.

Also, I think we need to better utilize nuclear power.

I'm all for free (or reduced) oil from the sandbox.  Chavez in Venezuela needs some attitude adjusting, too.  A well-placed Los Angeles-Class submarine is extremely persuasive.

Hi Guys

Just back from my little trip.... Didn't pay more than $3.00 a gallon. Back home to £1.00 ($2) a LITRE.

Our price is due to the HUGE ammount that is taken on tax... Not the actual price of the petrol. Its all to do with getting us out of our cars and onto smelly unreliable public transport. Oh and to fill the pots of the Government too.

I had a Dodge Caravan seven seater whilst on holiday. Over here it would be considered a monster. In the US it an average run of the mill car. The comfort it gave us in comparision to what we own here was fantastic. I would love to have something similar here but

1. Couldn't afford it. It would be probably in excess of $50,000
2. Couldn't afford to run it.

I see from the adverts on the TV that small is now the acceptable. If Gas remains high you guys are going to feel it. You never see anyone walk in the US (Unless they are the crazy English tourists dodging cars to get from one shop to another)

Depending on who you read there is only twenty/thirty years of oil left...

On another note -

Had a really great time. The exchange rate was great. Managed to buy, buy,buy BUT to the great joy of Mrs Birdman nothing of any interest. Just clothes. Oh did I mention the 37 cola bottles that Brent posted to me. That we had to buy another suitcase for and that almost tipped us over on the weighing scales at check in and where we had to unpack and re-pack to avoid excess charges. With two hundred people behind us and my dear wife swearing.    

Spoke with Jim but didn't get a chance to meet him. He has been far too busy fighting fires. I know he never "blows his own trumpet" but he defo deserves a pat on the back for his efforts in Florida the last few weeks. We followed it daily on the news and it looked pretty scary at times. "Well done mate" and we'll catch up next time around.
