Problem solved!!  '<img'>

Let this be a lesson/warning to all that plan to have their press down handles chromed, take it all apart before sending it!!!!

It was dry as an over cooked turkey in there!! I basically took it all apart, cleaned it up and regreased it with white grease and a shot of lithium grease. Put it back together and its now as SMOOTH AS CUTTING BUTTER!

Mission Accomplished with out damage to my cherry machine.

Congrats on the fix! Thanks for the warning about disassembling before sending to be chromed.

I learned another lesson about chroming last year. If there is any screw,nut or various fastener that you want to keep, take it off before sending out to be chromed. I have a habit of taking something apart and then replacing the fasteners from whence they came so that I know what I need to buy and where it belongs.

I found out the hard way that if you leave "semi-loose" hardware on a peice to be chromed, it will be removed and trashed. That really sucks when you haven't taken a picture or commited the peice to memory.

Never understood why people chrome the crank handles. I don't think they were originally, were they?

I like to keep the look original as possible.

I believe they were, but it was not the quality we know today.
The split doors on the VMC27's and VMC33's were not chromed, but a flat grey.

I think all those aluminum handles were highly polished.
A polished handle looks real close to chrome but becomes
tarnished and dull within months.

Glens right. The 27's and 33's are polished aluminum. You clean spray a clearcoat on after polishing to protect it from tarnishing.
