Glen,

Good points.  My eBay name is the same as my name here.  Each time I was outbid by an SMC member, I had (what I thought) respectable bids.  Also, each time I was outbid, the SMC member knew it was me prior to bidding.  In this example, Doug posted a message letting me know of the bid.  Like I said before, there's no law against it, but it does serve to ruffle the feathers a little.  Just my 2 cents.

I'm sorry if I have broke a board etiquette rule here. It was not my intention to offend anyone. To me, an auction is an auction. It would not hurt my feelings if anyone here were to out bid me. If you want, I will retract my bid as I do not want to ruffle anyones feathers.

Doug,

Thanks.  No need to retract your bid.  If you want, get it.  I will not bid again.

Hmmm. So what does everyone think?  Etiquite-wise, is it ok to knowingly outbid another SMC member?

My two cents... it's an auction and it's quite possible more than one member is interested in the same part / machine.  First to see isn't necessarily the best way... when I see someone else bidding or posting on an auction that I'm looking at I contact them off line and tell them my max bid (I'm a sniper typically).  I figure whoever is willing to spend the most wants it the most but no need bidding eash other up in the process.

That said, there are always situations where an auction means more to somebody than the dollars they're willing to (or can) spend.   That's where the fraternity (no slight intended to the ladies here on SMC - just didn't know what the right dual gender term is) part of this site comes in... Sometimes I think it's reasonable for members to alert ohers and ask them to watch from the sidelines.

PS - on ebay I'm hartlenb

I like the idea of posting the Ebay user names.  I am so grateful to have all of you and your knowledge as a resource I can go to for help on machines, that I don't want to bid against anyone on this board.

P.S.  It's sorority.

Let's face it! eBay is one of the only places to find this stuff anymore... It isn't like
you can drive to Wal-Mart for a Ammo belt..... I don't think ebay should even be a
“can I have someones permission to bid”... We all collect and we're all looking.... I see stuff
and post it here all the time to help out someone... usually more than one someone.
I have been out bid by folks here... I'm just glad someone I know (from here) got it.
It's no big deal to me, another will come along....

Eric

Ok I got to add to this ...
like I said (and feel) I don't think we should get permission... but it is nice to
know someone here may be interested and give a heads up if someone is going to bid.
You guys are right... that way there isn't a bidding war.
But personally if I bid on something it's because I need it...
But in most cases I usually need a part and someone here already has it and I have bought it off them.

I, like most scan eBay looking for something someone has
listed under a wrong heading or don't know what they have
or what to call it... like cap catchers, lids, etc.
then I have posted those here under
auctions topics for all here to see and bid on... cause I know
how hard it is to find parts!
I can't say thanks enough to Moondawg (Glen) selling me
that Dole part this year to finally after 9 years completing
my Coca-Cola Dispenser.
It's tuff... most here collect, just collect, some here buy
to restore and sell to make a living... So I understand how
some here can get feathers ruffled.... But we gotta all know
it's not to make someone here mad.... We all like the same stuff!

You know what's worse.... Go on a road trip or machine/cooler hunt with another collector and
go down the wrong isle and they find something you are looking for....
Makes for a tuff ride home....

Eric

I not so sure someone here did get the items in question. I didn't and thats ok. I wil try to be more considerate to everyone here next time. However, I tend to agree with Eirc reguarding e-bay bidding. Good day to all.

The Dole dispenser stand Eric is talking about was purchased on e-bay a while back. Much later I sold it to him for what I paid for it, plus shipping.  So why did I buy it then?  The seller was 30 minutes from here and I just knew that I, or someone else was going to need that part someday. (plus he had some other stuff I wanted to see)
       .

Hmmmm.....Now I am wondering if I bid against Eric?  '<img'>
