Well a few years back shopped a show with folks collections. Had a thread at the time. Can't find it now. Bought www.real-collections.com or collectors domain don't recall. Think have let them expire. Was no interest at the time.
If I recall nobody was comfortable sharing. Wish i could find the thread but not high on my need to get done list.
Would be a great show.

It's a good idea, but the same situation may be true today. Only a select few may want to show their treasures to the world. Plus, I know from experience, when you write an article or publicize anything good that you may have, you get bombarded by all types of people wanting to buy yours, sell you theirs, or threaten you. Been there, done that.

Agreed,
people would have to have the option to remain anonymous.. not give out locations or make them up, heck its TV.. they make it all up anyway..

some I'm sure would share, but if you make it mandatory they have to divulge location and even name, many will balk.

I think that we'd all like to show off our treasures, but we went through that when I was " out" there. You get bugged to death, uninvited visitors, and I actually got threatening emails. ( with me being such a likeable guy.........)

The aspect of security is a real issue now more than ever. Yes, with publicity you can gain business opportunities and possibly a new item or two will come your way, but it's not without a price. I am 32 years older than when I started collecting machines, coolers, etc. it certainly is a different world now.

OK, off of my soap box, sorry!

Sounds about right. Sucks that technology and or society has gotten so bad that we (or some) are concerned of repercussions in showing off our collections on a large scale.

I for one would love to see a coin op version of "Cribs".

Sadly it is not the same World it once was. My "old things" habit takes me back to better times. Not hard to give any indication of actual location. A show of such would be far better than the silly crap now. Lost all interest in the new show when 10 minutes spent fawning over CW or whatever it was scratched in a timing cover. Proves nothing. Off my soapbox.
Will give this a revisit.

Sounds like a cool idea. Gameroom Magazine used to highlight people's collections. I think something like this could be popular.

I think its brilliant. I've always wondered where an item I missed out on ended up. Did it end up in a museum or private collection? Where do these items we search for everyday end up. Always been a mystery to me and this may help me see what collection its in. I can understand people don't want someone hounding them to sell something but why not show it to interested parties in the hobby. I however love to show people my collection and educate them on the history of a machine or item. The thrill of the hunt and showing my collection to fellow collectors who love this hobby is the best part. I would be honored if someone wanted to buy one of my machines. My machines may be NFS but I would be thrilled if someone else saw the beauty or history and made an offer. I may say NFS at this time but I never know when or why I might sell an item in the future. I may have a duplicate or found one in better condition or just want to save cash for a future purchase. I see an offer as flattering and a potential future buyer and home where it will be appreciated and preserved. My opinion may be different then some but I for one would like the future generations to see and feel the history of these machines.

The machine I have followed for a long time is the Tavernette which I would love to own one day. Its out there somewhere and I'd love to see the very secret collection its in. Then make them an offer.  biggrin

Thanks All !!
When the second "Tavenette" shows please let me know, outstanding.
Well seems I still own www.real-collectors.com. It is in a sorry state of under development at the moment. I just put test links in and called it a day. It appears.
Own 30+ domains so please forgive.

Can do anything folks would like with this one. Looking forward to suggestions.
Thanks!

I'll let you know if I see another Tavernette for sure. Those are the types of machines that are tucked away in collections we would be amazed by. This is where your website could come in. This could be the gateway to seeing amazing collections. You could have different categories IE (Gas and Oil, Soda Related, Cars) really anything. Then people could choose "post anonymously" or "publicly with contact email". Your website could be similar to www.pinterest.com where people post pic's but yours will be whole collections and the ability to contact the owner if owner chooses that option. Well get to work! We need this website ASAP  :big grin: I may have regurgitated a little of what AJF mentioned above.

I would prefer posting publicly because I make contacts all over the country from a simple email. These contacts or collectors could point me toward something I'm looking for or even point out something they saw for sale I might have interest in. This type of contact landed me a Pepsi calendar last week from a bottling plant in my home town I never new existed. That was all from a simple email. Ironically this collector also has a unreal collection but is cautious about who he shares his collection with. He's the type of collector we need to share on your site and I think the anonymous part would bring those types of collections to light. Here is just a tiny glimpse into his collection below. He did give me permission to post this a while back.

Jared, The Tavernette was a machine purchased from the Schmidt Museum when they auctioned off all the items. I found information on this machine while doing research for another machine. It appears to be from the late 20's based on an article I found. I did a little digging to see if one still existed and I found it in a video of it being restored. I have posted that previously on this site. I contacted the restoration guy who restored it for the owner but he explained its in a private collection and he could give no further info. I explained to him I found some information on the Tavernette that may be helpful in understanding the machines history. He said he would pass it along to the owner and it was great I had found something because they had no information on it to date. It is a great looking machine and right up my alley on the rarity scale.

Wow. I take it that the first video is " as found" from the Schmidts, an earlier restoration.
Do you know what it sold for at their sale? I like those early machines.

Seth
Cool machine !!!

But on the collectors topic . I would love to let people see my stuff just like Seth said . I don't have nearly the cool perfect stuff a lot of others have , but it was a blast getting what I got . And it's fun telling the story to others when they stop in at a garage sale the wife has .

I agree I wouldn't want them giving my location away or  address . But other then that I'm good with it .

Ditto Seth and Leonard I like showing my stuff to other collectors that's why I am doing the country store to showcase some go my stuff. We have also decided that the store won't have enough room for those big machines so we are doing a diner theme and game room in the other building  I just love this old stuff and the history.

Thanks all !!
Best to start with the web page. Anyone that wants to share. Send whatever you want to say and a couple of pics or short video for starters. Will check any photos for geo tag. Best if no cell phone photos/vids. I'll need to build server links for first batch by hand. Anyone knows a web page guru in need of work let me know. This one is easy just submission form attach/photo's/vids and such.

Send to: cjs@lost-coast-designs.com

Suspect this will never make it past a web page. There is nothing to sell=why bother.
Hope can just have kind folks showing off cool stuff. Will see how it goes.

I like this thread from HAMB. Just great fun looking at items and wondering where they went:

Just my input on the collectors privacy issue.

I see nothing wrong with featuring interesting collections on television.
Who says they must disclose real names or locations?
There are many "made for TV" collections around the country and many of them are owned by members right here on SMC.
Considering the research and history each guy has already aquired on his own stuff and is willing to share with us.....
it sure would make the production cost of a T.V. series a lot less expensive.
As an example: I heard there is a guy in Florida that has an awesome collection of early candy and cigarette machines that would fill an entire TV episode of 'collectors'.
I for one would record it!  happydrinkers

Well instructions would help :-).
Take a couple of pics or a short video. Save them somewhere you can find again on your computer. Open email and create a new message. Address that to: cjs@lost-coast-designs.com

Put the user name that you use here as the subject. Type whatever you like to share as the message. Mouse to the top menu bar and select "Insert" use the "File Attachment.." option. Remember where you saved the pics/vid? Navigate to that folder and select the first file. Click on "Attach". This should take you back to the message. Should see the attached file. If want to add another just right click where the first is listed. Add any further.

Click send, Done.

This was written for Microsoft Outlook but same approach should apply to other email software.
Any questions/problems just ask.

Ha! Haven't written a software how to in 15 years. I'm sure it shows, anyone please let me know of any errors/omissions :-)
Thanks!

You have it, Creighton.
Any email has a paper clip or "attach file" button or method. After you have composed the message, click on the "attach" and then select the appropriate file or picture (s). Then send it. Simple as a VMC 139  biggrin

I sent some videos. Not sure if they are to long. How many seconds should they be?
Seth
The limit would probably be with the capacity of your mail sever, or capacity on the other end to recieve.
Not a time factor so much as file size.
AOL usually limits the file size to 15 meg. If your email went "out" you're OK on your end.

Regret only received one and no it does not work. 6 computers tried. Ran into the same thing recording Peter Rivera (Rare Earth) at a private party on my iPhone 5. There must be a file size/duration Microsoft does not like. Try shooting a couple of minutes worth and can see how that goes.
Work has just got ugly so may be a few days before can get get back to this.
