Leonard is awesome.  He's helped me plenty of times too.  From making me a locking mechanism for Stoner gum machine to all the steps in buying, picking up, and delivering a Bally Skill Roll for me, and all the things in between.  He's a very unselfish person.  I vote that today is national Leonard day.  I'm arranging a parade in Ohio as speak.    Seriously, thanks Leonard for everything, you are one of a kind.  You are like family to me.

O.K. back to Jims post.  

Did anyone ever find a National cigarette machine with the match dispenser on the left side?  I saw one once in an auction for three scrap machines years ago.  Mine doesn't have one and I always thought that it would be cool to dispense the penny match book.  If so, send me a picture.

My National 7 Pull has three matchbook dispensing columns that are behind the cigarette vend columns.  I bought the machine from the owner of a longtime vending company and as he explained to me, the machine gave a book of matches with every pack.  I have never tested it.  The other interesting fact that he shared with me is that they would get local politicians and judges to "sponsor" the matchbooks so I would bet that the vending company never had to pay for the matches!

I know some of the cigarette machines have a match dispenser on the side opposite of the coin mech and there was a separate penny per book vend system but I have not seen that on the many Nationals that I have looked at.

PS:  And the rumors you heard are true, Leonard is a helluva guy.  He has always been quite helpful and even shot me a free part or two including the missing bottom shelf for my Vendo 81-D.  What time is the Parade?  I need to dig out my tricycle and get my clown make-up on!

I have/had three National's two have what Tim has and one has the other style that costs you a penny for a box.
Mine still had the original matches inside.

I can't help out on the national machine but since it's National Leonard day I have to say he is truly a great guy and will help out when he can. That being said I have only had great dealings with all the members here that I had an oppurtunity to meet or make a deal with.

The machine I'm working on functions just as Tim stated; during the vend cycle, a pack of matches is dispensed from one of three columns in the back.  As far the match vendor along the left side, I have an early National that has this; deposit a penny and pull the lever/knob for delivery.
Do you want photos of the penny vend matches column...?  There's really not much to it, but let me know so the next time I go to storage, I can get a few photos of the inside. In the photo below, the two outside machines have penny match dispensers...
