All,
I'm getting the VMC 56 7-Up bottle machine going. When I started it up last night (about 2/3 full of product), it quickly lowered the temperature. Problem is, it kept on lowering it. The stat never shut off the unit unless I turned it completely off. The box was below 20 degrees. I started thinking the stat probe is incorrectly placed.
For you other 56 owners out there, is this stat the type that has to be touching the evaporator or is it an air-sensing type. There is not a long pigtail on it and there is a clip which holds it to the evaporator assembly (not the coils). However, what gets clipped - the tip or is it just a clip to hold the thing in place?
The photo below shows the set-up on my other VMC 56. However, this was the set-up before I started restoration and it's not been tried since. Regardless, it shows a close up view similar to the 7-Up machine.
I have another stat which I can try tonight. Ideas? '>

Hello
The tip of the t-stat should be hanging in the air behind the upper evaporator coil. It should not be touching any metal.
Sounds like you need a new t-stat.

Like Kevin said.. On my machines there was a baffle on the back of the evap that directed the air towards the rack side of the cabinet. The tstat was clipped to this baffle.

Put the end of the cap tube in a glass of ice. If this shuts the machine off, then clip it to different spots on the evaporator until you are happy. If the T/S does not react to ice.......replace it.

FYI - you can do the ice water trick even without the tstat or machine plugged in. Set the tstat on the warmest setting then drop it in the water. If you hear it click after going in the ice then it's working. No click and it's toast.

Update.... I think I have it. The original stat was toast. So, I stuck in another one I had and tried that. Well, the compressor wouldn't even kick on. So, I took that one out and took the cover off (couldn't believe I had 2 bad stats). After cleaning out a mother load of dead spiders, that one worked. The ice trick was successful (thanks Glen) and I am playing with the settings and location now to get it right. Thanks to all.

I've got the stat set on 3 and the box (in my garage, which is a little warm) is coming on for 5-10 minutes and staying off for 15-20. Does this sound about right?

that was about the cycle time my V-39 (If you recall) was running at in the end and I was happy. Glen stated anything over 10 mins was fine. Sounds like you had what I had. In the end I had three bad T-Stats before getting it right. Glad its now sorted out. Nothing worse than spending all day moving the probe around trying to get the best spot.
