Leonard,
I found a picture where the machines were mounted to your style of candy machine.
As far as the red color, it could be original. The pictures I seem to find show either the machine as a solid red or the machine with a marbleized grain to them.

The Canteen is one of the few of my toys that is a KITD. Keep It Till Dead :-) Been busy with vintage drums of late but a nice tool to get all of the flappers clean and shinny is a large vibrating Tumbler. One of those items that Harbor Freight has that works fine. Using coupons can get one for not much. Recommend fine ground walnut shells from a gun reloading shop. Will post progress on my Canteen but will be awhile. Creighton
