Ideal 55 hot compressor

Hi,

For the past few weeks I have had a "burning plastic" smell in my garage that is coming from my machine.

The compressor housing is red-hot to the touch.

I am wondering if I should have the unit re-charged with some fresh oil added, or is something more serious going on?

 My First Question would be Is the Fan That cools the compressor Working ?    Other Members that Work on the system's im sure will chime in

Fan is coming on-

I should verify that the condenser is not plugged with anything though.

It has been ice-cold inside the cooler so I am thinking that this isn't the issue.

I will double check and let you know.

is it cycling on and off, or constantly running..

being getting hot, I'd imagine it's running the whole time and that your thermostat is bad..

it should only run until desired temp is met, then turn off, to cool down, then restart when it needs more cold.

or try adjusting your thermostat to a lower position, start with one and see it if turns on and off over an hour or so, and record the inside temp with a thermometer in a glass of water, if you need it colder, then turn it up to 2 and retest...

the glass of water will be an equivelant to your beverage temperature.

Well, I plugged the machine in again last night, and lo and behold-

The fan was not spinning.  I gave it a nudge, and it started working again.

I was positive it was moving the last time I checked.

Now-are there bearings that I can lube on the fan motor?

You could just try some good ol WD40 for  Temp fix, but like already stated.. if that is the ONLY problem, spend the 35 bucks and replace it..

We had a similar over-heating situation with a Vendo 39. The evaporator motor quit working and then whole machine simply shut itself off. Is there some thermal protection built into the 39 that protects the compressor if a fan motor quits? Or does the wiring and thermostat also need to be replaced in the Ideal 55?

Once I replaced the motor, all was well.

No, it's a sealed unit, replace it.

There is an over-temp/over-current device on the side of the compressor, it normally resets itself after a cool-down, but it could be opened due to repetitive on/off cycling when your unit was over-heating, in which case it would need to be replaced.  or....the starter windings gone open on you, or the potential (start/run) relay's not working.
