7-Up Cooler

All,

I picked up the 7-up carry cooler (see thread below this one entitled "Help!" for photos).  Anyway, it's in really good shape except for one thing.  Some one brush painted over the white.  The brushed paint is flaking off and the paint underneath looks good.  What, if anything, can I use to remove the brushed paint?  I think if I do, it will look really good.

I'd try hot soapy water first then Mineral spirits (paint thinner). Next woul be Lacquer Thinner. Thats what worked on the postage stamp machine. Go slow and check a test spot. It will take the good paint off as well. There also is Aircraft Coating Remover but it is nasty stuff.

I am with Creighton.  I have used Acetone to take off the paint over on the edges of thermometers  but you have to work carefully....

I agree with Creighton I've had luck with using mineral spirits (take your time it is not an afternoon job), but would be afraid the coating removal would also remove the original paint.

Thanks, guys.  Dumb question, but do you just use a rag with the Mineral Spirits on it and start rubbing, or is there a technique?  I really don't wanna hurt the original finish.

You want to get all the dirt/oil etc off first. Hot water and a small amount of dishwashing soap. Rinse and dry. I use paper towels to get the worst off then rinse with water and start using cotten towels (old t-shirts work). Turn towel often to keep from rubbing old paint into the good.

The aircraft remover will strip it to bare metal.
