Finally, moondawg originally also mentioned DP [firstly, were these embossed also]

The VMC generic 81' s that were bought by Dr. Pepper were not emobssed. They had round porcelain signs on all three sides. Some now are being restoed with a rectangle porcelain sign on its front-the way Jeff Walters has it in his 3rd edition book, but it is wrong. Orginial rectangle signs are much easier to find and less expensive than round, thus making it the restorers 1st choice. This machine is not far from me, so I have been watching it also. GP- if you are out, I may go for it.

I have personally seen a generic DP with the rectangular sign. Unrestored and original, When the sign was pulled you could tell it has been there for years. This was 5 or 6 years ago. Either sign could be used and be correct.

Either sign could be used and be correct. I agree! My generic 81 has been repainted once as far as I can tell. It originally had a 17" x 6.5" rectangular sign, which I won the other day and round 10-2-4 decals on the side and had been replaced with a smaller rectangular 'chevron' logo sign and matching 'Dancing P' bottle cap decals. My all original DP 110 has round signs on the sides and a large 10-2-4 decal on the front. |

I have two DP vmc 81's that are both still unrestored. One had a round decal on the front and when I removed it, there were screw holes that would fit a round sign. The other one had a rectangular DP sign. I took it off and there were the same holes, in the same place as the other, that would fit a round sign. Joey and Tom, maybe you are right-they could have been done either way. I don't know, but when I put the orginial round and rectangular sign on the front of each to compare, the rectangular sign seems to big (long) for the front? Take a look at Jeff Walters book (page 234), you will see what I mean. Maybe there is a smaller rectangular one. that went on the vmc 81. Tom, congrats on your new sign. I watched that one on ebay, but am looking for another orginial round one. Attached is one of my vmc DP 81's. The one with decal (before removal).

hi,
i will not be bidding, it will go to high as I have to consider
shipping and duty on top of the auction price. if i had been
able to agree a price offebay when i first emailed him then
i would have bought it and took a risk, embossed or not,
but his price would have to have been right, ie just a very
good price for a generic vmc 81, then if it wasnt an embossed
I could just have sold it on in th US and if embossed, either
shipped it or traded it for arestored and then ship the restored

so best of luck everyone,

it will be a good and rare machine whoever gets it.
