Well, I swindled my first Pam clock.. Its a newer RC cola clock, but its in great shape with the exception of the trim ring around the glass... some rust forming.. I'll have to sand it down and repaint it. Otherwise, its a beauty..
A few Questions..
What kind of paint is used around the frame?
How do I remove the hands? I want to clean the back of the clock face as its dirty as heck. I didn't pry too hard on the seconds hand, but I imagine there is a trick to it?
What light bulbs go in it? The bulbs in it are 50w short bulbs.. and there were 2.. 100watts for this clock? The label on the back says 62watts.
The story... I've been working in a customers factory training them on a new machine... The first day in there, I got friendly with the plant manager... I saw the clock sitting in their shipping room.. I started talking to him about it, telling him how it would look good next to my machines... Not sounding too anxious though. The next trip down there, I started joking about the clock telling him I'm gonna take it. The 3rd trip, he said I could have it if I got him a replacement clock. That was all I needed to hear. My wife was going to Wally World, and I told her to pick up the biggest clock she could find.. My 4th trip down, I came home with this...

But no matter how bright the sponsors of this product were allowed when it was new, it may be wiser to use much dimmer bulbs for home use. Imagine turning all the house lights out for the night, and two 60 watt bulbs were still on, showing only the time ?  |

Exactly... The power company already sends me a xmas card thanking me for supporting them so well. I don't know if I will even keep it lit, but I'd like to have it there. I may even try to put the lights on a separate switch. I just need to get the hands off to take it apart.

I only have one clock and it has very low wattage bulbs... If they are too high they will melt the decal. I also have it on a switch so it can be turned on and off. The hands just unscrewed...

Thanks Dave. I figured it was supposed to be a low watt bulb. Probably a 25w... The hour and minute hands are held on with a nut. The seconds hand is pressed onto the shaft. I can't imagine a puller for it, but I don't want to pry against the other hands as well.

I would go even lower than 25 watts...
I'm sure mine are 12 or 15... Particularily if you are using it lighted all the time.

The Nut holds on the larger hands and just a little persistance and pulling the second hand will come off.. fingers may work or may take a pliers to lift off... shouldn't be too hard, unless someone glued it on?
The paint on the frame, is the the gold fleck style? I've used hammetone gold on those before and looked pretty good.

Too high and the paint "cracks". Mine recommends pretty low watt bulbs. I have two 7.5 in it.

7.5 watt is what I use also. That top little round tap on the top of second hand will release the second hand the others are just slotted with the second hand applying the pressure needed to hold them in place. Be careful they are very easy to bend. Also no stong cleaners on the face just warm water. As for the rim I would just take some triple OOO steel wool and shine it up. Nice looking clock hope you enjoy it...

Thanks guys.. the bulb socket on this clock is for a standard bulb, not the small nite lite bulbs.. I'll try to find the smallest wattage and install that. i used Mr. Clean wipes on the clock face and it looks ok. Then I used glass cleaner, and it looked better. I would much rather clean it with the hands off. I'll give it a shot in a few days.. Got other things to do before this one.

 I pulled the second hand off, and the shaft came out with it. It wasn't all that difficult, so I took it apart the rest of the way, cleaned everything, now I can't get the shaft back into the motor. How do I get this shaft back into the motor? I tried pursuading it, and it was fighting me, so I stopped.

Bubba, that is strange. When you took the second hand off you unscrewed the small round tap and the shaft came off at the same time. Is the shaft threaded on both ends. Usually the second hand shaft on these is seperate from the minute and hour hand. It should not come out like that if it is not threaded I would say the shaft has seperated and you may have to order a new motor for it. There is a guy in Ohio, I will see if I can find the info that you can get motors from...
I have taken a lot of Pam clocks apart and cleaned them for myself and friends and I have never had that happen.

My second hand was pressed onto the shaft. Kinda like one of those speed nuts you hammer onto a big wheel or other wheeled kids toy. I tried to pry the hand off, and the whole shaft came out. The minute and hour hands were held on with a nut that I was able to thread out and remove the hands. I removed the glass, cleaned the inside, back of the glass, and re-assembled the hour and minute hands without trouble. Now I have this second hand I can't put back in. I'll try to take some pics of this thing tomorrow. When disassembling it, I even tried putting a pair of pliers on the shaft to give me a way to pry the second hand off.

Nice Clock First time I ever heard a shaft coming out on the second hand .Anyway Aspbear is correct theres a guy here in Ohio that has the Motor & New handa if needed .Type in Waynes Neon Clocks .Iv been to his place He must owen at least 500 Oringinal Neon & Light up Clock's .Now he dose Reproduce them also But I'v Seen the oringinals .

Even if you have to get a new motor, you still got a very nice clock. I gurantee you are not the first to mess up something by just trying to clean it up.

Well, I fixed PAM tonite... I pulled the motor apart, gears all over my bench, but its back together, and working. It looks to even be keeping time. I'll know in a few days justs how well. I am soo happy right now.. I started out just trying to figure out what I did wrong. I was trying to pry the 2nd hand off the shaft. It is threaded on. Because I was trying to pull it, it pulled the shaft right out of a gear. Then the gear moved a bit. While I was trying to put the shaft back in the gear, I ended up denting the gear instead. It just wasn't finding the hole in the gear. When I pulled the cover off the motor, gears just started falling. There is about 6 different gears I think. In any case, its running and it hasn't cost me anything yet.. I'm ready to break another one |

I normally would have done the same, but the challenge got to me for some reason. It felt really good when I plugged it in and saw it run too. I may have to start fixing some of my other projects now.

Is there any lube point on the gear box on these clock motors? Mine has been getting loud. Its not obnoxious, but it makes noise. I want to put it by my arcade games, but its a bit too loud for that area right now, because my gameroom is also my basement theater and kids playroom. This clock has been plugged in since I put the motor back together, and it is still keeping time. I haven't had to adjust at all.

Ken I would use a little white lithium grease it keeps all metal parts lub'ed and reduces wear. By the way great score on the clock and great job on saving the motor  . Like Glen I think I would have bought new. Pat |

I also use the white lithium grease and can air to blow out all of the dust and then just apply a small amount on the moving parts of the mech. Bad part is when these motors start making noise they dont last to long, but hey look at all of the extra time you gave it by rebuilding.
