Hi Todd,
I wouldn't say any V39 is rare per say.
Vendo produced the 39 from the late 40's into the late 50's.
At least 70,000 or so of them were produced.
Vendo, as technolgies advanced, incorporated changes in all of their machines.
A letter was usually added to the model number signifying some sort of improvement or change.
The early model 39 was all red and had a "rib" running down the coin door and the main door.
Also, the early model had "ICE COLD" embossed at the bottom of the main door.
The late model had chrome trim separating the white and red paint
and a redesigned bottle drum that would accomodate "King Size" 10oz. bottles.
Late model 39's dropped the "ICE COLD" and the rib
and had a cast coin entry bezel instead of stamped steel.
You will find machines here and there that are a mix - probably produced mid 50's
(that is when Vendo changed to the red/white paint scheme).
Post some pics of your machines - everyone here would like to see them.

Even though the later drum was re-designed, it fits the same so your early model drum will fit it your late model machine.
