Does anyone here have a C55 that is sucessfully vending cans? I am having problems trying to get the C55 I recently restored to vend cans. It works great with the door open but as soon as the door is closed it will only vend a can or two before it stops vending. I have bypassed the "sold out" switch to eliminate it as being the problem. It doesn't appear to be binding up. it does vend bottles.

From what I understand Terry -
To vend the various size bottles and cans, you would use a combination of shims/spacers.
For example:
One bottle may use 6 shims on each side and a spacer on each side.
Another may use just the spacers and some did not use a spacer or shims.
With the correct shim/spacer set in the machine,
the first two bottles of cans should have about a 30 degree pitch.
When the 3rd bottle or can is put in, you should have about 1/16 inch clearance between the 2nd and 3rd.
At least that is what the manual says!
I'd like to see what your back spacer rests on in the can position - can you take a pic of it.

I have tried various shims and spacers to get the cans at the 30 degrees and that works great with the door open but as soon as the door closes thats when the problem starts. It doesn't appear to be altering the bottle chute.

How are your back spacers positioned?
Could the Sold Out flappers be pushing the cans back causing them to jam?
When they don't vend, can you tell where they jam.
When you say bypass, I cannot discern whether you removed them or just disconnected the switch.
Try retaining them back somehow.
Other than that, I can't think of anything offhand that could be causing your problem.
I'll keep thinking.

Terry,
I have been thinking.
Since the SO flappers are the only items that interact with the bottle stack with the door closed...
...it must have something to do with them!
You say it works fine with the door open, so it can't be the can diameter or anything related to the vending stack.
Try removing the SO flappers or simply disconnecting the spring that holds them open.
Process of elimination should reveal the cause.
That is all I can think of currently.
Good Luck!

Tom,
The "sold out" flapper has been completey removed from the machine. Still no vending of cans. I will try again on friday ( next day off) to solve this problem. I am curious of the results as to anyone who has tried to vend 12 oz. aluminum cans from a C555E. Thanks Guys.

Terry,

When I get a chance, I'll load my machine with some cans to see what happens.

Just some thoughts,

#1 - The Sold Out switch isn't going to physically affect how the cans/bottles vend.

#2 - With 12oz bottles (IBC Root Beer) which are roughly the same diameter as 12oz cans I have no problem vending. (I'll measure/compare when I get home tonight)

#3 - The side spacers/shims you should have in right now should be the same as what you would have for a 12oz bottle. For a size comparison between 12oz bottle (crica. mid-fifties) and a modern 12oz can I would say that you should find a 1950's 12oz Coke bottle and measure it to how it compares to can.

#4 - The only peice of the main/bottle door that ever comes into physical contact with the vending mech or the bottles for that matter are the Sold Out Switch "Flappers". The bottle flap obviously isn't preventing the cans from coming out of the machine especially if it isn't even trying to vend them.

The only other switch involved in the door that would prevent the machine from vending is the Anti-Jackpotting Switch located on the outside of the Bottle Flap to prevent thieves from stealing a bottle. I can't see how that would let a few cans vend then stop but at the same time always allowing bottles.

After you've put a few cans through and it fails to vend them anymore, what happens when you hit the coin switch/throw a dime into it? Does the vend motor for that particular stack even attempt to move?

Hello Brian,
Thanks for trying a can test with yours, I really appreciate it. My next test is to remove the bottle door flap so that I can get a good look up into the bottom of the vending area. I will check it out on friday morning. Thanks again, Terry

PROBLEM SOLVED!!
First I want to say thanks for the info. from you guys! This was a tough one to solve but it provided me with a good learning curve. I removed the outer bottle bezel panel and bottle door so that I could see what was and wasn't happening during testing. I ended up tweaking the bottle slide a little to relieve any binding and I also removed the paint from the topside of the "fingers" to eliminate any friction with the cans. The bottle door micro switch and the vending relay had intermitant problems as well. I removed these items and cleaned them up with contact cleaner and pressurized air. Now the machine vends cans great!! For what it is worth I used 1 shim and 2 spacers on each of the 4 sides.

Glad you solved it!
I bet you only needed to adjust the slide to solve this problem...
Ashame you removed the paint from the "fingers"...

The paint that I removed was only on the flat aluminum piece that comes into contact with the cans. These originally were not painted so I thought I would remove the hammertone paint to reduce any friction in the contact zone.
