Does anyone have a ballpark figure on what a reputable body shop should and would charge to paint my 81D. I am going to have everything blasted before hand. All the body shop will need to do is the minor dings and prime,paint. What would be the best type of paint to use ? Thanks !!!!!

In california, paint, body work for a complete machine would run you about 800-1500.

Vet,
Make sure whoever "blast" the machine knows what they are doing to avoid warping the metal. this will drive up your bodywork cost. Just a thought.

Would it be better to have it media blasted rather than regular sand blasted ? Thanks!

It will cost more to media blast it , But it won't harm the metal , it will just take off the paint and cleans the metal . Then the body shop will have to prep and sand the metal, which they have to do any way if there fixing dings. With sand it puts small pits in the metal that can be primed with none or little prep to prime the machine, you just have to be careful who does it because to much pressure and heat will warp the metal.

Like Terry said, make sure that the person knows what they are doing! Hover to long in one spot and serious warpage begins. Silca based (sand) blasting will work just fine as long as they stick to some simple rules like the size of media and the pressure they blast at. It's also the cheapest.

When you start getting into what I call "exotic" media, that's when the price goes up. Glass Bead, Plastic, Aluminium Oxide, Walnut Shells.

Incidentally Soda Blasting has started to become more and more popular. It simply uses Sodium Bicarbonate, Baking Soda, as the media. The blasters use pressures and air consumption rates not unlike a regular sand blaster but with better results and more safety.

It will not warp or distort metal and does a bang up job on rust & paint removal. Classic Car restorers are using them a lot to protect expensive/one of a kind body parts.
