R-12 Substitute

I've got a buddy doing the refrigeration on one of my USS-64 machines... someone had put a tap fitting to recharge, and it ended up leaking out again. We welded new schrader fittings on the high and low sides.. He wants to put in R134A instead of R-12 or the other blend.. I didn't think they were compatible, but he is telling me it will work fine....

The R134a will mix with the oil and can clog the filter/drier and or capillary line. Best to use the right refrigerant in the first place, and now is a good time to replace the filter/drier if he hasn't already when installing the schrader. Good luck.

Correct, if this is an old original compressor that has mineral oil for it's lubricant, the 134a isn't going to be compatible & it will cause the compressor to fail.

Use R12 or any of the commercial "drop-in" replacements such as HotShot/414a, 414b. R409. etc.

I've seen R-12a at my local autoparts store, does this stuff work well with R-12??

You'd have to go to the manufactures website & see if it's compatable (able to mix with...) R12, or if it's intended to totally replace it (R12), as a rule you aren't supose to mix refrigerants it's actually illegal. unless the replacement is rated/approved for "topping off" the refigerant it's compatable with, in this case R12...

Normally you shoud not mix refrigerants, because they either will not mix properly or cool properly and that can be hard on the compressor.
