I am restoring a Dr. Pepper VMC 81, back to its original beauty. I have heard that, though vintage, the rectangle sign that some use on the front is not original to the Dr. Pepper VMC 81. I've been told it was round sign or decal. True or not? My machine has a round decal  that measures 10”, and through the wear of the decal are 4 (round) sign mounting holes 8” apart.  I’m not sure if the holes original or not. The two horizontal holes are not level '<img'>.  I know a guy who has a round vintage sign for sale, but his sign is 11 ¾”.  This sign seem too large to me; first it would not fit the “holes” that are in my machine, and second it would be a mighty tight fit between the top of the machine and the coin door (approx. 12”.)  I thought maybe it goes on the sides, but it would fit on the right side only. On the left it would not because of the top door hinge and ID plate. I know that my fellow SMC members can get to the bottom of this! Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, that is the one that I'm going to bid on, but I don't want to bid on it if it is not correct. I hope to find out what is correct before the the auction ends. Here is a photo of the Dr. Pepper machine that I am working on.

The picture on the cover of Jeff's book shows a solid green Dr. Pepper 81 with a rectangular porcelin sign like this

Thanks Glen, but I've been told that the rectangular porcelin sign is not orginally how Dr. Pepper had them made. The sign was round. I just can't seem to find on to fit. The one that is 11 3/4" seems to large.

Well I won the bid on the sign. Guess I'll see how it looks. I'll post pics when I'm done.

I seen pictures one time of an original Dr pepper with the rectangular porcelain sign, Ive also seen the round, and even plastic bottle caps screwed on.
