I was digging into my CS-72 and noticed the coin mech was a CoinCo S75-9800A with a date stamp of Nov 8, 1977. What gives? Is this a good thing of a bad thing? Is the replacement of the older coin-mechs with new ones a common practice? I noticed the Cavalier Service Manual for CS-72 doesn't even mention the coin mech.

This is a good thing! Newer ones work better, and are more reliable.

You have to remember these machines were used commercialy. Distrbutors would interchange more reliable and servicable coin mechs as they became available. The 72 was a workhorse and was around a long time. Also the coinco unit you had could adjust the price up to what inflation drove it. The old coin mechs were not versatile in that way.
