JohnieG recommended changing the starter to one of the 3-1 starters on the Cav I may be getting. Are these relays all the same, or is there any spec I need before I get one. Also, where to get one? Is it a grainger item or something more specific? I also would consider changing it on my 88 while I am doing the rewire on it. Suggestions or part #'s???

I got my 3-1 starter from Funtronics, along with the wiring harness for my Vendo spin-top.

Get your 3 in  1 from either Funtronics like Bob said or get one from Eric at Global Compressors.

There are many brands of "3 in 1" starter boosters, I use Supco's "3 n' 1 Start"  part no. RCO 410, it's for 1/3-1/4 H.P. compressors

"Supco" stands for Sealed Unit Parts Co. inc.

I got the hot start installed in the Cav today, and the compressor fired up.. it is not getting cold though, so I think it needs some freon... Does a local supply house sell single shots of the R-12 substitute? Would the compressor run if there was no freon? low freon? This ran for about 15 min or so, and the air temp never changed, so I shut it down. The high side line is still room temp, so something isn't working...

When I wired in the new capacitor, I eliminated the temp overload and the relay, is that correct??

Yep, you got it correct!, unfortunatly, you won't be able to run down to the local shop & grab a can of 12 substitute, you'll have to get a local refrigeration guy to charge it up for you, besides, if there's a leak, you won't want to have your money go pffft out of a leaking system, and yes,, the compressor will run with low or even no gas in the system, but as you can tell, it won't cool, and this also causes the system to leak in even more moisture (water vapor from the air) which can causes issues) best to have it checked for leaks & repaired if nesc. & pulled down into a vacuum, & recharged ( a good time to add a new inline filter dryer!)

I'm an ex-auto mechanic, so I have some R-12 experience and some tools. I have a gauge set, halogen leak detector, and a vac pump. If I could have seen into the future, I wouldn't have gotten rid of my 20lb can of r-12 a year ago...  '<img'>   I am / was IMACCA certified for R-12 back 15 yrs ago... I still work with and know a few AC guys that can get me what I need..
