I'd like to say that I found this under a bush or ran an add and a little old lady came up and offered me £100.00 to take it away but I'm afraid that's not the case.
Never-the-less I feel that I got a bargain of sorts and the best thing is the Wife didn't hit the roof.
I haven't a clue where to start with this. know it needs a new correct noozle and hose. Its in the garden at the moment the idea is to get it cleaned up and re-sprayed and bring it into my room in the house.
Have joined oldgas.com at the suggestion of a few of you last time we all spoke about petrol (sorry gas) pumps. So far as per usual there doesn't seem to be anyone this end of the world into collecting what I like and can point me in the right direction for parts.

I've also got an original shell shaped top for it too. The letters have been re-touched (badly) in the past so will need to have a look at that too.
At the momnet its full of spiders and alsorts of creepy crawlies. Have spent a considerable an=mmount of time in a wooded area, just sitting there..

Dave Very very cool! Check out the vendor Links at Oldgas.com, I really liked Weber's Nostalgia Mart, and bought most of my parts from them. Vic's Place was another good source, but Vic has sold off the business, and to me it doesn't seem to carry the wide selection they once did. I am sure Eric and others here will also give you some of their favorites.
Welcome to the club!

Dave, I'm happy for you, you now have a new hobby.
Glad your wife hasnt objected. Like I tell my hubby, I have to enjoy my soda machines while I'm still young and the arthritis isnt too bad.
Thinking about a gumball machine myself, that is if I can find one I like and is at a good price.

Terry - The globe I have for it is original its a shell shaped glass globe. I'll get it out today and stick a few photos on. The only damage is a slight chip around the neck but thankfully that is covered when in place on the pump.
Brian - I don't think I'll do a full restoration. All the mechanics are there but as I won't be digging for oil just at this stage, although prices being what they are its an option, I won't need it to work. I was thinking of taking the outer casing off getting it sand blasted and having it re-sprayed. You are right about a little research for the right colours. I would suspect that it was originally a shell machine and possibly has the original colors already showing (although a later resotration)
Creighton - Right up until the present really we have been a imperial country. There are still people out there getting arrested dailly for selling fruit & veg in pounds and ounces rather than the European Killos. When I first started driving about 20 yrs ago we'd have petrol (gas) priced by the gallon. Then it was priced in gallons and litres and only recently has the gallon price dropped off. I think that because petrol works out to just under a pound a litre ( yes that's right) they are too frigtened to show what it really is by the gallon.
Marsha - I think my wife realises that if I'm spending my money on hobbies like this there isn't time or money to go out getting drunk and womanising (not that I would but hey the oppotunity could have been there) She's a good girl really and even occasionally helps me shift the beasts around.
I'm forty in April so I look at this as an early Birthday Present. My family are going to give me money instead of buying me things I don't need and I'll put that towards getting the baby up to full health. I'll then always have something to remind me of the milestone. I know most people buy watches of something similar but you guys, I'm sure will understand the need for soemthing big.
Thanks for your comments...
Dave

Weber's carries parts and check www.time-pass.com Scott is always set up at the Chicago show. Carries a ton of stuff and put an image on oldgas.com that is a great site (thanks Joey for posting that site for us) those guys will go crazy over it! They're like the Bizzaro world of soda-machines. com Just as crazy and love those pumps like we do our machines and dispesners. Great pump, great condition!

Jim & Co..
have taken a couple of piccies of the globe. It original and very dirty. The lettering will also need to be touched up profiessionally too. Other than the small crack on the rim it appears solid and will certainly do me.
Sorry about lack of light on pictures just started to snow. It weather you Americans are blowing this way.

Tape those letters off with 3M pin striping tape and paint them yourself... You could do it! Great looking Globe... cracks no biggy... that'll be covered! Have you found a place to get parts, decals, paint codes, etc.? What make and model is that pump?.... Have you placed it up on oldgas.com? Bet they'll go crazy....

Kito - Thanks for the kind words. I think that they are probably more common here than in the US. Perhaps something at last that I could export, who knows.
Eric - The pump its self is a Avery Hardol again a farily common pump in the UK. I have searched all the internet engines for companies this end without success. I have now started going through ebay and finding possible enthusiasts to e-mail direct for parts, still no luck. Apart from the noozle and a new hose I think its pretty much complete. I would like to have sight of a picture or two of restored ones just to be sure.
I e-mailed Shell to day to see if they have any pictures or can give colour codes for the original livery. Don't suppose I'll get a reply, but you never know.
Well the snow has stopped. I'm day off in a couple of days and was hoping to get the thing stripped but they reckon minus 5 possibly for the ext week. Don't fancy that.

Dave you gotta stop by oldgas.com... I see guys answering color codes and parts questions all the time... might even be a member there that's from your “side of the pond” (that's your line but I like it and have been wanting to use that! '> You got a killer pump there! Can't wait for you to post a complete image of it with the globe... It it very tall? My Bennett pumps are as tall as a Vendo 39 without a globe.

Hi Eric
Have posted already on oldgas. Got a very warm welcome and the moderator has even posted pictures. One member has supplied at telephone number of a contact in the UK but so far every time I have called there has been no reply.
You are right. I have been looking at it oldgas for a while and there are some good guys there.
The only thing it lacks is the intimacy of this place. Perhaps I need to be around a while before I feel at home. Soda-machines just feels like a warm blanket and is always the first website I check every time I log on.
The pump is about the size of the vendo 39 minus globe. On thursday, weather permitting I tihkn I'll strip it down. I'm concerned about just dumping the insides. Sure I'm not going to ever use them and I'll proably keep the pump ( I find it difficlut to let anything go) but in case I did sell it in the future would the insides make it less valuable??

I was thinking the same thing as I junked the inside.... All mine are gutted I did keep the hose retractor/weight think but got rid of about 150+ pounds of stuff! But everyone seems to gut them.... But I think if I ever get a Bennett 60 I'd might keep the insides ... might...
Yeah... you can tell that site isn't as friendly as this. I've read some pretty heated topics there... This place is great.... I check everyday.... I've made friends I've never met in places I'll never see. It's awesome!
Well gonna check out oldgas. to see what they thought of your find! They'll help!... But they'll never be us! '>

Dave, Went surfing through Oldgas.com , and onc you dig through the "Paint codes? Buy my book " and "Don't ask stupid questions newbie" postings, I managed to located this info. what it looks like in real life I don't know, nor do I know if they were "legitimate" colors across the pond:
Quote | Some automotive paint numbers for Shell colors used in the forties. PPG# 81652 Fleet Yellow PPG# 71660 Fleet Red |
On another note, I am of the opinion DON'T touch up the globe. I fear the resale value (if you wanted to sell it, and buy a repro and take the family on Holiday with the proceeds) would go down. Put the faded side facing the wall, it will look killer in your game room.

Terry - That is pleasing to know. I bought the pump and the seller threw in the globe. Guess that means I can be considered for find of the week. Who would have ever thought that....
Eric - Will add the globe to the site todat... Thanks
Kilroy - Thanks for those colours. They were probably the same as we used. Even if they are not I of a mind to g with them just so the pump fits in better in my US Gamesroom. I take your point about touching up the globe. However, I think that it has probably been touched up in the past.
Thanks guys. I have a big grin on my face at the moment. Me with a find of the week...

I was impressed with the pump, but when I saw that globe I flashed back. I think remember this in Canada.? Is there significance in the name ShellMex ? Like Mexico? And Dave ........ hope I'm not the only one who thinks your original paint looks just fine the way it is. Over here when we find an old gas pump we HAVE to paint them, they're rusted.

Glenn/Terry - The apint job on the pump was a older restoration. It was beginning to flake here and there. It would have been fine for the garden but "Er indoors" has put her foot down and said that if it were to enter the house it would need to be re-painted.
So, with that in mind I took the day off today and after doing the husbandly things like shopping I got a couple of hours to strip the pump down and now its all in bits awaiting a body shop visit. The four panels will need a re-spray. I have no idea what that's going to cost.
I just couldn't bring myself to dump the innards and have covered them over for another day. They are hidden out of view for the time being so should not get too much ear-ache. All this whilst dodging the snow.

Sorry Chaps,
Have bought this post back to life. I need a little bit of help from you guys. I have stripped the pump down now and have will soon have the panels off to be sandblasted and hopefully re-sprayed.
Question 1. - Powder coating good or bad??? Pros and cons??
Question . - I still haven't bought myself to throw away the insides, however, I found the link below on oldgas
http://www.oldgas.com/shoptalk/ubb/Forum1/HTML/004756.html
The guy that did this is English and he has been very helpful in supplying pictures and advice. I like the idea of ditching the insides and making use of the space the way he has done. Maybe even creating a little haven for a possible gumball machine collection of the future(don't tell the wife) however, having been bought up on the concept of keeping it as original as possible I just can't, at this stage, bring myself to say goodbye to the machinary.
So come on what do you think??? Is it a bit like taking a soda machine and creating a filing cabinet.

Quote (davethebirdman @ Mar. 19 2006,4:12) | So come on what do you think??? Is it a bit like taking a soda machine and creating a filing cabinet. | A restored soda machine without out a refrigeration system is a very fine looking file cabinet.
Unless you were going to sell petrol to the neighbours to finance the game room, it's acceptable to remove the pump. Terry is dead on, it's unneeded kilos of dead weight, and how would She who Must be Obeyed enjoy the odor of petrol permeating the gameroom, and maybe the house? I didn't think of adding shelves to my pump. I need to hide some stuff...
As for the pros and cons of Powder coating.. Pros: nice glossy shine, less likely to chip or ding. Cons: slightly more expensive

I check oldgas.com everyday seems 95% dump the guts.... I have done the same on mine. It would make a great CD & DVD holder. As far as powder coating I'm going to powder coat the base and inner frame, the pannels I'm gonna paint. and use decals... don't want to drill holes for the little signs... that way down the road if I want to change them or sell them, it would be easier to change paint than blasting off the powder coat and no holes to fill. Just me....
