I thought I would post this as through the years I have been contacted many times by people wanting nickel mechs in their machines. There are obviously several ways of doing this, but the following procedure is how one of my mechs was originally modified from the factory. You can do this without removing the mech from the machine.

First, remove the rejector from the mech. I have taken a picture of an uninstalled mech and drawn on it. 'http://members.cox.net/honest1/mech.jpg' (uploaded here also)
After removal of the rejector, put one slug or nickel in the nickel slot. Pull the finger back so you can crank the handle over until the handle is horizontal. With your pinky finger, make sure the nickel is seated all the way to the down in the slot. Lastly, take a fairly long slotted screwdriver and place it over the blue line (in my picture) and give it a whack with a hammer. The object of the whack is to dent the small metal plate down just enough to hold the nickel in the slot, but not so hard that it cannot be pried up if you ever wanted to convert it back to a dime.
Secondly, you have to adjust the rejector so that all dimes are rejected to the coin return cup and only nickels are accepted. I have numbered the steps on the picture located here: 'http://members.cox.net/honest1/rejector.jpg' (uploaded here also)
1. Loosen the screw on the deflector and slide it all the way to the right. Retighten screw.
2. Loosen the screw on the separator and slide it all the way to the left. Retighten screw.
Now the rejector should accept only nickels and all dimes should be rejected. Be sure to test the rejector before reinstalling.
Let me know if you have any questions and I’ll get back with you.

Since the picture I uploaded to SMC was too small to read my notes on the second and correct mech picture. The link mentioned in my first post was updated and a large picture can be obtained there. Here it is again: 'http://members.cox.net/honest1/mech.jpg'
