I have been offered a 30 lb bottle of R12 for $150. Is this something I should buy? It seems like a good deal. Anything I should look for before buying? If this is a good price I was just going to buy it and sit on it. I also thought that if I needed work done on a machine it would probably be cheeper if they used my R12. So in short I don't plan on doing any work myself  mostly just thinking of buying as an investment. Is it worth it?

If you don't want it, I'll take it for that price. Whatever happens, don't let it get away for that price.

As long as you trust the person you are buying from.. hopefully its sealed or not full of air. If its been opened, be careful with what may be in there.

Can't say it any better than that!

Just for a small indication of what R-12 is worth, try checking out Ebay....Unfortunately Ebay's typical prices are very close if not the same to the regular prices paid on the street or in industry.

The only thing you need to be weary of is reclaimed refrigerant. You want what they call "Virgin R-12" not reclaimed. With reclaimed R12 comes all of the impurities that were in the system that it came out of, water, soldering particulate and any other little nasties that might have shown up due to the host compressor burning up.

So, if it's nice clean and unused, Josh, I'd snap it up!

I just spoke to him. It is a sealed 30lb bottle of origional R12. I am going to go get it tomorrow.  I think $150 is a heck of a deal.

'<img'> Since it is not reclaimed R-12 - It is a good buy - for you. A new tank - of Rb-276 which is the same as R-12 "for soda machines. is around 230.00. for a new 25lb tank. Re claimed R-12 is really only good for systems without cap tubes. My friend just bought 3 tanks of R-12 for 50.00 a tank. All new tanks - not reclaimed - At one time before the invention of Rb-276 - ----R-12 was going for a new tank - 1000.00 a cylindar.

I think I am going to pass on it. I just don't have the $$$. After buying three machines today and driving over 1000 miles to get them I am pretty broke. If anyone wants it let me know and I will get it for them. I just don't know how shipping it would work.
