BE carefull!!You are correct to be sceptical of the "one size fits all"compressor, for example in general,if you were to replace a 1/5 HP unit with a 1/4 HP unit it would end up "short cycling'' that is turning on and off more often, because the bigger unit (1/4HP) would have a BTU (Heat moving rating) that would be too large for the cabinet size of that machine, in other words it would get the air too cold-too quick and shut off prematurely before cooling off the contents of the machine, this would lead to shorter compressor life and poor performance and higher than needed energy usage. Best to take the number off the original compressor and have it cross referenced to the correct replacement size. it's also a good time to decide if you are converting it over to a new refrigerant (from R-12 to 134a,etc.)

Yeah..220,221 whatever it takes.
Remember, all it needs is a shot of Freon!

Spray painting does NOT restore a compressor

"Hope" is good, but it's not an action plan.

Pat,

It's funny you mentioned "Remember When"...
I was in Terry's shop some years ago when I met his brother Jeff.

And Duane,

As JohnieG stated, not all refrigeration units are the same! replacement with a very similar and size unit is essential.

My six cents,

To everyone that replied:

First I would like to thank everyone that replied to my posting. I am impressed that I even recieved any reply. I usually am a person that does everything on his own learning as I go. Asking for anyones help is kinda new to me. So thanks again to all!

So with renewed confidence in this forum I thought I might post my letter to "Remember When" in hopes that if I did not ask the all the essential questions I might be corrected. And if anyone has any imput to any of the below questions they might stear me in the right direction.

Here it is:

Hi

I am looking for refrigeration units for my Ideal 55 Slider, 85 Slider and Vendo 83 pop machines. I am a novice at refrigeration systems so I would need a little more information on installation than most. I do have the service manuals for each machine and the skills for restoration of body and mechanical up to the refrigeration system.

What would be the cost for each cooling system (individually and/or combined)  for the above machines including s/h to Spokane, Washington 99208?

Would there be any modifications needed on my machines to install your systems?

As you know the Vendo 83 refrigeration system just pulls completely out of machine but the Ideal Slider 55 is a cold wall system with coils surrounding the inside tank bed. Would this be much more difficult to replace?

Since these cooling systems worked when I pulled them out  would I be better off just having them rebuilt. Is this something that you do?

What are the advantages/disadvantages to installing one of your new systems as opposed to rebuilding the existing system?

Is there anywhere I can learn more on this subject on-line that you are aware of?

Do you need anymore information on my machines to make a purchase from you.

Thank you for your time and help in this matter.

Duane

Thanks to all.

1.First thing is to identify what size compressor (Horse power rating/HP) for each unit you'll be needing to replace, 1/5 is typical of most smaller machines, but not always 1/4 is common too. once ID'd Granger's has a line of replacement Decks, or you can have a Co. like Glbal compressors (Plug-Plug ':<img:'>  ) rebuild your deck too. either can cost, doing it yourself requires an investment in the proper tool of the trade,
vacuum/recovery pump, gauges, etc+$$$$. but you must be licenced to purchase Freon other than automotive R134a, talk to some  local refrig. guy's in your area and  get a couple estimates and start from there..( I use Hot-Shot to replace 12
when I convert mine from F12, also 134a..)

2. the Ideal sliders compressor deck comes out easly too it has "flare-fitings" plumbing it to the upper cabinet area, just
remove or recover the Freon and undo the fittings and unbolt the base, "slider" out '<img'>

I recieved a reply from "Remember When". I thought I might pass this information on.

First of all, you need a licensed refrigeration technician to install your condensing units( compressor, fan motor and condensor, comes mounted on a base ready for install). The Vendo 83 is more accesible to install the unit, the slider would need a little more work due to the small area to work. Both systems take the new ozone friendly refrigerant, example 134A or 56. I reccomend getting a new cold control as well for both, as this elliminates all problems with the compressor cooling the unit, as the cold ontrol( thermostat), turns the compressor on and off. If the original is bad, it could hold up the technician as the machine needs to cycle on and off, if the cold control is bad, it will not cycle off. The price for a 1/6 HP unit and a ¼ HP unit for your 2 machines is $850 plus $70 shipping for both to the Spokane area. The cold controls are $60 each. We throw in an inline dryer for both condensing units which your technician will nedd for the install. We do not accept credit cards however for these units. If the instaler happens to damage the unit ( a certified technician more than likely won’t), we are not responsible and do not want to get into a “ it wasn’t me that damaged the unit” situation. Hope I answered all your questions. Terry -----

I am also researching "Global Compressors", "Grainger", "Tecumseh" and others locally as suggested. I am trying to find the best "buy" possible while learning all I can on this subject in the mean time.

Thanks To All

Duane,

Personally, that price sounds kind of high. We rebuild the entire deck for $495 which includes new compressor, dryer, service valve, 2 fan motors, wiring harness, thermostat, completely torn down, cleaned, painted, charged with R134a,
and an 18 month compressor warranty. Shipping runs around $20-$35. We only bill what UPS charges us. We also accept Visa or Mastercard. We have been in the business since 89' and handle refrigeration for not only collectors but also the local vending companies here in the Houston area.

Jonnie, thanks for the "plug" above. I'm sorry that I haven't had the time to post as I should. We have been swamped with work. Just that time of year! If ANYONE has a question they need answered, about refrigeration, call me toll free at
1 877 856 4996. Sometimes it's easier for me to answer over the phone. My typing skills have a bit to be desired.

Thanks to all,

Eric

Eric

Thanks for the input! Is the price you quoted for both my slider and Vendo 83 or just one of them?

Duane,

That's each. When we do a job, we make sure that the product you get back is going to be reliable and efficient. Also remember this is YOUR compressor deck we rebuild. The nice thing about it, when you are ready to reinstall it back in your
machine, it will fit just the same. We really try to keep everything as it was when you pulled it out. Sometimes, depending on the condition of the lower unit, we do have to change the whole thing. We can mount it to your existing platform, drill holes to line it up, or simply send it back and let you do the work for mounting. The other thing I wanted to mention, we sell a complete universal lower unit in 1/5, 1/4, and 1/3 hp. The problem you will have, is finding someone to install it. Service guys sometimes don't like it when the customer has his own parts. He can't make any on the mark up so he'll charge alot more for his labor. Just keep that in mind when shopping around. Still, you can save some if you find the right serviceman. '<img'>
