All,
Is there an acceptable substitute for R-12 to avoid the high $$ of a conversion or a certified R-12 technician?

R-134 is a substitute for R-12, but there is no substitute for a certified technician. We don't do this stuff ourselves.

Glen,
I agree. Luckily, my brother works in the HVAC field. I haven't talked with him about the machines yet and wanted to get some potential info before I did. He works on the commercial end rather than the residential stuff.

What about R-409 ? (which I beleive can replace R-12 without any change) I thought R-134 required conversion ? (ie. replace oil, seals, etc)

I have had very good luck using R416a as a direct replacement for R12 in my vending machines at work.
