I agree Larry,, I've asked that same question.. if your going to make a fantasy machine, who cares if it's a VMC generic, or a Coke 81D or even a 81b model.. Heck it's FANTASY... so who cares.. I have often thought of taking an 81a and making a fantasy machine out of it... I'ts MY fantasy anyways right? ??

but to each their own...

One thing to consider is a generic 81 is a VMC. And an 81a, b or d is a vendo. So if you cut up one of those, you wouldn't have the VMC bezel or lower VMC decal.

Yes for sure, the VMC is more desired on a 81. I would even go as far as saying the generic has passed the Pepsi 81 as far as value.

Unless your a scammer and try to pass off a machine as an original, I don't see the point.  I agree with John.  It's my fantasy, Vendo is fine.

I see both sides, but would lean in favor of utilizing a generic VMC since these machines were used for off brands whereas the Vendo 81 was always dedicated to being a Coca-Cola machine.  As John stated, "it's my fantasy", so use what you have available in keeping the project in your budget and above all have fun ! ! !

I remember when that first Orange Crush came out, was it a fantasy, or was it a rare breed?  I think its time to start the elusive Vendo Kayo or Yohoo machine, lol.

Has anyone ever figured out how many different brand generics were made?

Maybe VMC made and sold generics to the companies and it was up to the company to brand them.. There are a lot of porcelain signs similar to the Dr Pepper one...
some probably made by the same company... also a few metal signs that bow out maybe made to cover embossing on machines?... Most of these I've never seen
on a machine but would be cool to see an 81 done up in one of these small brands. Also a lot of decals out there and decals would have been cheaper than
having the signs made...
