Has anyone ever had a 78 RPM record with small amounts of paint on them?  I have one and it has a few drops of paint on it.  Wondering if Goo Gone would eat the old shellac records.  Any suggestions?

Try turpentine, if its an old 78 it probably isn't latex paint.  Definitely No shellac! Goo Gone 'should' be fine, but best to test it first if possible.

Here's a thread with some other options to try:  http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/can-i-remove-paint-from-a-record.324679/

Sorry to be off topic... Someone spilled white-out on my brand new laptop today....  darn Goo Gone pretty much melted the plastic! Better buy a record that you don't care about to test on...

Hot water should do the trick. Solvents will be a bad thing on 78's.

I'd certainly try whatever your going to use on a similar record first, Hopefully one that's already trashed.
It also depends on the material, which depends upon the year of the record.
The link posted above was certainly informative.

Tried Goo Gone, Naptha, and hot water.  Hot soapy water, a tooth pick, and a baby toothbrush did the trick.  Now I'll let it dry and then try it tonight.  Naptha and Goo Gone took some of the sheen off in the two areas that I tried.  I wouldn't recommend either of them.

There were ten spots on the record.

Were you just going for looks or do you hope to be able to play it?

I wanted to play it and it sounds great.  The little worn area I created didn't affect the sound.
