have you tried soaking it in hot water?  Or if it's a small item, running hot water from the tap?

Lighter fluid. Not the kind you use on the bbq but the kind you put in a zippo

There's a product called acri-sol, or goo-gone.

I spray WD40 on and let it soak for a minute or two. Then gently rub off gum with paper towel/soft rag. Works on beer signs and oil cans.

Yikes, easy to damage the paint. I'd go with the hot water first. Second attack would be Goo gone or WD-40. Best to apply the solvent to a micro fiber towel and go slow.

I try to soften it up a bit with really hot water and then use Goo-gone too. Be patient!!  It a while sometimes to rehydrate the masking tape adhesive.

Afraid to do much more than I have already, hot water and rubbing with sponge. Tape was put on a clock face to cover a brand name, I think the heat from the light bulb solidified the adhesive. Any solvents will remove the thin layer of paint I'm sure.

Removed as much as I could, the haze remaining is lessened with cooking oil rubbed on it.

I have learned my lesson with being too aggressive trying to clean items and end up ruining them.... down

not to hijack this thread, but does this process hold true for tape marks on painted metal?  I have a Cav 72 with a small tape mark that looks like it has been there a long time.

I would try the most gentle process first. Hot water, then maybe some goo gone.
That should work.
