The serial number is 102358   C 41  ... so what does that mean as far as what number it was in the line up of 200 thought to be made? |

I've been trying to collect serial numbers on RC and 7up 81s, not an easy task and most people don't even respond to you when inquiring. I want to eventually put into a data base. All the numbers I have are above 200 and all end with C41. |

That was a tough machine. I understand it was a RC but Glen and I were talking about it while still on auction.
He had a opening bid of $5,000 which means he knew what he had and there was a reserve meaning he wanted more then $5K. Understandable. I would also. Missing a large mech, large door, and the VMC bezel you are looking at $1,200-$1,500 more in just those 3 parts alone. You are never going to find a original yellow coin door and how the rest of the machine looks, straight but a little rough it would have to be restored.

Once you restore a RC unless it's for yourself or even then, everyone is always going to question if it's a true RC.

With that being said I would only invest in a RC if it was a nice original that didn't need to be restored because once you do I think it's worth less.

I personally believe more than 200 were made but that's my opinion, as with many others I have talked to.
As far as a restored RC 81 being worth less. Its just like any rare antique item. Whether it be a 71 HEMI cuda, a 1907 Harley Davidson, or a rare Soda Machine. Over restored hurts it in my opinion and a documented correctly restored piece will command strong money. My RC 81 will eventually be restored, as it was painted years ago and done horribly. They were nice enough to even sand and prep the machine for me for the awesome paint job that they applied. I took it apart when I bought it, serviced it, cleaned it up and it makes a nice Garage Machine for the time being.

It sold for $6700 privately. eBay was only used for advertising. I believe a "newbie" member from SMC got it.
