With all the stamping and cutting/welding I hear about with machines, is there still a real reliable way of determining if a restored VMC Royal Crown 81 is in fact a real machine? I don't mind fantasy machines, and I think all of the soda collecting is neat, but I want a true original rc. but in searching for an original with no luck, I am now looking at a restored one I found. Any help is greatly appreciated!

The only way to be sure is to remove the door liner and peel back the insulation to see if the embossing is original or welded in. With the price that those machines go for, any seller of an original should be happy to oblige qualified buyer. Tim

Just by pulling the door liner back to expose welds will not guarantee a authentic machine. The "Clone" on ebay has been welded up and bodywork done on the inside. All VMC RC 81s had the early large vent cabinet as they were early built machines, They also all had red bottle door gaskets. from the homework that I've done. They were built in 1956. As the Slogan "Better taste calls for RC" is embossed on the machine. That slogan was introduced in 1956 and in 1957 RC had a update and changed their colors from yellow and red to red and white and introduced the diamond logo. Also on fake RC 81s you have to look at the circled R or registered stamping, Some do not have this, others have it but they are wrong or poorly copied. This picture is the Correct embossed Registered Logo.

The circled R on my Pepsi 81 is very dim. I think media blasting and painting wore it down a bit. So I wouldn't write one off because the symbol is light.

The Circled R is different from a Pepsi than a RC. The Pepsi is more flat and wider, the RC more bold and tighter, I will post pics tomorrow.

Spoon-feeding Newbies since 2001... Yeah..220,221 whatever it takes. Remember, all it needs is a shot of Freon! The Vendo V-83 is the '59 Edsel of the coke machine world. ;p Spray painting does NOT restore a compressor 11 is louder than 10... "Hope" is good, but it's not an action plan.

You can see the difference in the two. There are several RC 81s out there with the R in question.

Great thread, with lots of usefull information for any prospective RC-81 buyer. I think any buyer should have a checklist of what to look for before laying down the money for one of these machines. As mentioned above, pulling the door liner and checking cabinet vents, bottle door gasket color, and for the embossed R. etc. should be part of any pre-purchase inspection.
