He should be so lucky if someone called to offer $1,500.

I don't know why this movie quote popped into my head...but there you go.

yeah, nothing like pasting another picture from another site or ad to cover the fact you're too lazy to post your own, or perhaps because their grandma's machine looks like a rusted/dented t*rd

Then the old "Don't even think of wasting my time by offering ~insert dollar amount here~." routine.

It almost doesn't matter if the item is actually worth way more than that*. Such an attitude is so off-putting. Who wants to deal
with an attitude like that?

One seller around here's been trying to sell on old Jeep. He won't take less than $1200, claiming it will scrap at that price. He's been trying
to sell it on CL for almost a year now.
If it will scrap for that why is it still being posted??

I had a fellow offer me a woodgrain-era CSS-64, unknown if functional for $300, just to make his wife happy and clear some space blah
blah. I thought "I bet your wife would be happy, you too." I admit I was tempted to make him an offer, just for the heck of it.

People say craigslist is like a garage sale. More like an antique shop, in my opinion.

An $850 coke machine from 1997 is not suddenly worth a million bucks just because someone placed a NASCAR/Dale Earnhardt/Super Bowl
XXXVIITSWORTHLESS front cover on it.  darn

*In 99.9% of cases it isn't even worth the "brush-off" offer.

IMO, the most off putting line is "go ahead and look it up on eBay. There selling for over "x" and I'm only asking "y".

My usual response is then why are you taking such a loss selling it on Craigslist or at a flea market, etc.  Like asking $100 on a run of the mill ford gumball machine which he claimed they sell for over $400 on eBay.

Guess some of these sellers figure it's their best shot of combating readily available knowledge.

I remember once a seller was offering a USS-64 for $500. Wasn't quite what I was looking for, but close. Now I admit, that price is not as far out of line as some. However, the machine was locked and no key. No  way to know if complete. I asked him if his price was negotiable. His response was that he looked at prices online, the took off 50% because he "just wanted it gone."

$500 is a "I just want it gone" price? *shakes head.*

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are decent sellers out there who just don't know about these things. It is rather convenient that their ignorance is always in the "ask too much" direction.

Perhaps one even has to ask prices that high at times. However, This "Don't you dare offer me (twice what the machine is really worth)!" business is just asinine, unwarranted, and frankly rather hostile. If you're this doubtful of getting the price you want on craigslist, why not try eBay?

Another dreamer...

At first, I thought he wanted $175 and it was a typo (not $1175), but nope...he came down from $1450.

Don't forget the famous "I've been offered a bazillion $$$ but only asking $1000"
The only thing that comes to my mind when I read, or hear, that one is, Really?
Did you have a life changing experience that has you trapped in a reverse auction?
