While looking through some pictures of a USS, I came across photos of the loading instructions. I noticed something I wasn't expecting - instructions for loading two rows of cans to a tray. I've attached a copy to this post.

Were these machines able to vend from two rows of cans on a single shelf?

Nope, just one row of can can be vended from each shelf.  The second row of cans on the back of the shelf may be a way to add pre-cooling capacity to a machine that has no area to pre cool cans.  I never noticed that in the instructions before.  The spacer bars that can be moved back and forth on the shelf keeps the cans/bottles in a nice straight row and keeps them from moving backwards and getting out of line--if for example somebody decided to rock the machine.  I have all of the spacers for my USS 64 but rarely use them when vending cans.  They seem more helpful for the bottles to me because if the machine is level and you load the cans carefully, they roll right down.  I suppose having the spacers in the correct spot made it easier for the guy who serviced the machine to load product more quickly as well!

Do the can trays have the center spacer or is that a piece that would have had to have been ordered?
Would be a nice part to reproduce!
Does it say anything about the second row as just precool like Tim said or is it vending capable?

My Loading instructions are different than those (and not as clean):

Maybe only certain machines had that option. Did the USS-96 allow cans to be doubled up on a tray?
