I'd love to get my hands on a Dads so I would have all the rootbeer sliders. Might take a few years or be a nice pipe dream.

I also have an unrestored embossed Hires in very good condition. Good southwest machine. Great restoration candidate. Was next on the list until the Orange Crush arrived. Will sell or trade.

Ok, I need help.  I have 3 sliders in my warehouse for almost 10 years and I wait patiently for the slider bug to bite me. I just don't get it but I'm keeping an open mind. What is the attraction?  They look a little "squatty" and boxy.  Is it the sliding mechanism that creates excitement?  Please, Bob, no disrespect intended but I am feeling a little left out that I don't get it

Signed, trying to get that "slider" feeling

Personally I like the fact that they embossed so many flavors...

You won't find that many in the uprights!

I agree with Jared, I like that there is a variety of embossed brands out there and the fact that most are fairly inexpensive compared to many of the uprights and don't cost a lot to restore. Another nice thing is the simplicity of the vend mech. The only draw back is the refrigeration system is not as easy to work on as the uprights.

Also the fact that they vend 5 selections of beer or pop and have a huge precool area.    Beats a 39 or 33 anyday.

Brian...no offense taken.

I like them for reasons the others stated, they are easy to move around, readily available, embossed, fun to own, and can be used as a cooler or a vending machine.  If the bug hasn't bit you, you should probably sell yours.

We all like what we like...personally, I don't like pepsi square tops, coke water coolers, small bottle single vend machines, etc. but that's just me.  We should all collect what we want and enjoy them. That's what makes this a great hobby!

BTW, I have a restored coke V81D, a VMC 81 Pepsi, and a couple 110's, so I'm not limited to sliders...I just like anything that serves multi vended cold ones!

Ok. I like the fact you can vend multiple bottles. But if I have a craving for an orange crush and I have stacked the mech with 5 pepsis and 3 dr peppers before i get to my OC, don't I have to slide 8 bottles out of the mechenism before I can get to what I'm in the mood to drink?

It still seems a little single flavored to me. Also I was going to do a complete tear down of one and I could not figure out how to separate the coolant lines from the tank liner. Are the lines welded or glued to the inside of the tank? It sounds like a good winter project    I may restore one of my generics to Johnny Ryan which is a local Niagara Falls independent soda company.

Each rail is it's own selection / flavor.

The lines are soldered on which can easily separated with a plastic putty knife.  Kinda like a tar, simular to the Westy boxes like your WD-5.

Agree with Ken they are a pain in the ass to take out!

A selling tool if you are selling a slider missing rack.

Buy 9 cases of 12oz can sodas, 5 different flavors. Lay 5 rows across, each row being 1 flavor, each row will hold 1 case. Fill the pre cool area with the cans standing stacking them 2 high, it will hold the other 4 cases.

It's a great selling tool when you can say it can hold 9 cases of soda and show machine full. That is great holding power.

Unless you have serious rust issues or refrigeration problems, it is not necessary to remove the liner like we do on upright machines.

How do folks replace the stainless "belt buckle bar" on these? I know that a replacement piece is available, but it is intended to be mounted on top of the existing one. I don't really care for that idea too much. I can't picture it looking right.
I have a couple machines with that piece dinged up. I also notice on Ideal's that the piece came in two versions, one with a lip, one without.

Planning my winter projects now, right after I finish with the current "honey do" list. darn

I tried removing mine from my Barq's machine and it was a disaster.  It appears that once the tub is removed there is a cross member from the inside.  In between that cross member is the stainless steel piece in between the body and the cross member.  I would post a picture but the machine is at sandblasting.

I'm not sure what I will do to remove it.  I may have to break the welds on the cross member, remove the old piece, put the new piece in, the tac weld the cross member back in place. . .

I recently had a parts slider that was going to recycle but it had a very nice stainless trim I wanted to save.

I destroyed the metal holding it in and had to grind off the lower flange of the trim, so I ended up with an overlay like the reproduction.

I would never try this on a slider I intended to keep.

On my Hires the painter/body man straightened out some of the dents but it was in bad shape so he scuffed it up and painted it. I have the replacement part to put over it. I have tried to remove them from scrap machines also with no success.

I too, like the sliders but the headache of restoring the cooling unit.. I am not a refrigeration guy, and the steps to restore one the right way , just don't make it appealing for me to work on them.
1 haul the machine to the refrigeration guy to evacuate the system, then pick up another time on another visit
2 haul it back to the shop to tear down.
3 restore the machine, compressor deck, etc..
4 haul machine back to refrigeration guy , leave with him , reinstall cooling system and recharge, then come back to pickup.
5 haul it back to the shop to finish restoration.

just a lot of running around for me... I like systems that come out in on piece.
