Hey everyone,

My newly acquired Grapette sign arrived today but I wanted to run it by and see if anyone heard of any porcelain signs of this type have been reproduced...?
I bought it from pictures and was a little curious about the grommets...
I think this particular size may have been utilized on coolers.
Any discussion is welcome...

Didn't Paul Harvey or Ande Rooney have a line of repop' Americana porcelain signs, I have one of similar construction (only it's a Champion spark plug, heavy steel plate base, but the style rivets)

I Bought that same sign 13 years ago at a Gary Metz auction and was told it was original.

I know they do repro that sign just don't know the exact size... I've seen this same sign on a restored Ideal 35 looked awesome.
there is also a 7up round sign...
TomfromJersey may be able to tell you for sure that's his brand that he collects

Hi Jim
They did repo that sign, which is why I never bought one. I'm a firm believer that if it's repo'd it really hurts the value and collectability of an original. I know of 4 Grapette signs that were repoppped, they are all a different size than the real ones. I believe the size of the one you have was used on the doors of the delivery trucks, and on the front of a slider machines. I'm not 100%,but, I believe the repop of that sign only had 4 grommet holes and not 6, not certain though.

Thanks for the input!

Tom, anyway to confirm 4/6 holes for verification...? The other thing about the rivets is they are factory split or cut and not like a typical "rolled" rivet common on older porcelain signs...
It would relieve some anxiety...

Here's a little info from the seller when I asked him about any history on this sign...
Quote
i bought it from the guy who used to be,or still is the president of the Grapette collectors club by the name of Van Stewart...that was about 5 yrs ago,he told me he had a pair of them and he was selling this one because it had a chip on the edge.....he was always into high-end signs and never sold repops.I'm not aware of that particular sign being reproduced but i know of a smaller one about half that size thats a repop and the back of it is white, thats all i know.
Beginning to set my mind at ease a little...

Thanks for everyone's input!

Hi Jim,

It looks just like the one I saw a few months ago at an antique store  it was heavy and they wanted allot for it. Also had a cool Vernors sign for $400!!!

I think you mean Ande Rooney.

Yes! Ande Rooney,  you are correct, he repop'd a bunch of signs for a "route-66" / Americana line of signs & such. high quality stuff, heavy steel back with porcelain enamel
