Could be a Monday machine. Stamp worker didn't have his coffee yet and hadn't changed the stamp.
Classic Car rag does a cool "I was there" where the line workers share their experiences.
Take away, there is no consistency they just cranked out machines/cars per the work order. With whatever parts were on the line.
Spotty records at best.

I've seen it on machine tags in the past too... really don't think it means much... or it could mean it's SUPER RARE and worth double the money.. you decide..

My first V39 had an XH in the mode and SN fields. I assumed it meant something, but that everyone who knew what died off

It means Extra Hamster. If the original one died running the wheel there was a spare one to keep it running.

There an ebay auction going right now where a guy is selling 50 machine ID tags. He claims the XH means experimental run, for whatever that's worth.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lot-50-Vendo-ID-Tags-Model-V81A-V81B-V81D-V56-V44-V39-Coca-Cola-/261176587757?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3ccf5675ed
Maybe initial start up runs were "experimental" while they worked out the bugs of the assembly process, or maybe new equipment/techniques that were used to put these machines together during the experimental run???
What's the manufacture date?

It doesn't look like there is anything special about the machine...it needs to be restored.
