I have never looked at my v23 compressor before and was wondering what the proper name for this style compressor ? it cools very well and is from 1952 but was not sure why it looks so different.

those are "cooling" fins around the top. if you notice, there is no condenser fan motor,
so there is no "cooling effect" from forced air.

I guess the cooling fins work I have never noticed it getting very hot. Not having a fan does make it quiet

I've seen several in the early V39's and mine have always run silent and without excessive heat.
