change pancake compressor

The ideal 35 I just bought needed rewiring so I did so,  but the compressor was very rusty. after changing the wires I plugged it in and compressor ran but the lines between the coil and compressor had a hole in it. I do have a few newer units I could replace the whole unit with but does that hurt not to have old style compressor in place? Thanks for any help Jeff

If you mean hurting the Value of the machine, not really, It's better to have a running machine than one with a dead "original" compressor.  besides, you can't enjoy it if it doesn't run. you'll have to repair it anyway before you can recharge the system. so if you have a later model 1/4 HP compressor deck that will fit, replace it if that's easier.

If it's just the small steel cross over line that goes from the compressor to the condenser that has a hole in it,  (this is a typical failure on this system design) you may be able to braze it closed, or if it has multiple pin-holes, then you can replace that run of tubing quite easily if your at all handy with mapp torch & some brazing rod like dynaflow.

The nice thing with Ideal sliders is that the compressor deck has handy-dandy flare fittings that are easy to change & usually they have a service port right on the low side of the system.

I do have a 30lb drum or R12, I believe I will repair the hole in the cross over tube and give it a try, If I do put a different unit in,  is the compressor 1/4-1/5-1/6   I can not read anything on my compressor and was reading some older post and read that the slider uses a 1/5 or 1/6 any help would be appreciated.

I've seen mainly 1/5 HP units on all of the 35's I've ever repaired or worked on, but you're better off getting a 1/4 HP unit, as you'll actually pay a higher price for the smaller (1/5 HP) compressor simply because it's not a big "mover" at you local supply house, you'll need a 1/4 HP-R12 compressor with a low side service valve right on the compressor, you won't need a high-torque starting option because it's a capillary system and doesn't have hardly any back-pressure on start up.  (but if it happens to come with one, it won't hurt anything)
I'd go with my standard favorite a Tecumseh 1/4HP # AEA4430AXP J7JM (or AE155AS-238 it's the same unit)

if your supplier has a large stock on hand he might be able to extend the jobbers quantity pricing discount to your single unit purchase & you'd get away with less than $200 for a new compressor. with a 90 day warranty to boot. Graingers sells them too, but they tend to jack up the pricing margin quite a bit)
