Hi Everyone.
Have eventually shipped my V81'S from my brothers house up to my
new home in Manchester, [NW England UK].
The shiney all chromed up and sweating with a bucketload of decals
and pinstriping has been hauled up into the kitchen diner upon the
instructions of my partner Sharon. Sharon bought this 81D after I
bought my unretsored original 81A, [all rough and tough looking!!!],
as you can guess the 81A was instructed to remain in the garden,
along with a recent purchase of a much later Vendo63 can vendor.
eventually these two were allowed in the conservatory, en-route
to their eventual lower ground destination, once my back improves
sufficiently to achieve this feat.
the two 81's had been at my brothers for almost two years, the 81D
has started up and gets cold but the door light was not coming on,
I checked the forum and tutorials etc and decided to swap the bulb
in the 81D for the 81A and hey presto the 81D is now all lit up like a
xmas tree.
the newly acquired 63 has a Vendo Italy distributor serial tagplate and
is on 22Volts not 115Volts, so no need for a transformer, which is good.
it looks reasonably clean and reasonably complete but only switched it on
for a couple of minutes til its checked over for electrical safety. It seems
to cool and the coke light panel lit up.
the x9 pin coin mechainsm is UK but the seller advised it as not working.
i have no idea on these so am enquiring on ebay UK and other forums for
a replacement UK coinage mechanism, as would like to see it working on
UK coinage as two 81's obviously on US coinage.
I have read the tutorial on tying up the solenoid switch on this style of
vendor and am presuming it works with both a can stack as well as the
bottle stack detailed in the tutorial, let me know if its different!!!!!!!!!!!
not sure what to do with the 63, will wait to see if it works and whats
missing or broken etc.
however, would love to refurb and repaint as historical soda brand say
Cresta, [Its Frothy Man!], birdman will know what I mean!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
or maybe as my soccer team Manchester City, or maybe just revise to
look as old as possible coke or pepsi or other US soda brand.
If any of you have pix of 63's in off brands or older coke/pepsi 7up or
crush or squirt, then could you post or forward to me. I would be really
interested in what original light up panels may be avaialble to replace
my 70/80's coke sign

finally my thx to Birdman for posting pix of the 63 before I bought it and
sharing the comments he received from other memebers, it was really
useful. it cost me $275, which is probably high for you guys as there are
many available, but they are really rare over here so even with a duff
coin mech I am pleased with the purchase so far anyway.

Ginger, your 81's are nice, luckily restoration and shipping have been completed!
My comment on your Vendo 63, it's one of the nicest unrestored machines I have
seen and I think the price you paid was a bargain, even here in the US. Myself, as
a restorer, would not re-paint this one, but would wait for a more faded and ugly
V-63 to modify into a fantasy machine.
Just my 2 cents worth

thx jim and glen for your comments.
Glen, i believe you are absolutely right in your thinking,
i do the same with old slots, nice originals with original
screen print glass artwork just get a really deep clean
with adjustments and lubrication to max out their original
value either to me or to a buyer from me and yes i should
wait for a poorer example of the model to develop into a
fantasy machine.
the problem that Dave and I face in the UK is that we might
never see another 56/63 or similar non- embossed machine
in the UK in the next ten years or so to be able to convert
into a fantasy machine, so difficult to assess in what to do
guys any pix of converted 63's or pix of rarer original plastic
marquees

GP,
One thing to consider is a replacement light up sign and vinyl magnitic (sp?) covers with the fantasy design. It will look rather Mickey Mouse but preserves the machine until other options are available.

G.P. It great to see your machine and as glen said I would not change a thing
I owned many Vendo 63's and Cav. 64's in my time (not as many as Josh or Johnie)
and that machine of your's is one of the cleaner machine I've seen.
I would also wait for a sad looking Vendo63 or Cav 64 to come along
and do that up as your fanasty machine .

I am on GP's side. It is a mid to late 70's square top. Even though it is in good shape I would repaint it. I am not a fan of the black and red and like GP said, finding another square top may never happen. I think the fantasy machine is a good idea. What colors are the brand of Soda you mentioned?
GP finding an original light up panel for this machine in anything other than Coke will be hard. I would just have one made. Take a JPEG image of what you want to a local sign shop and they will make a new sign for you. It is cheep and it will look great.

You and Dave have managed to pick up several round corner machines,
I can't imagine you never seeing another square top.
Here is a sample of what shows up on our side of the pond,
so you can see how reluctant we are about taking a sanding block to yours.

If only ...If only..
I think that I have been very lucky over the last three years and
managed to pick up a 39,56 Westinghouse 44 & a Jacobs 50...
I've missed out on a V-83 and a transistional 81 embossed 7UP too...
There was a square top that emerged about a year ago but the seller pulled it...
Apart from a couple of VERY expensive allegedly restored machines I think that has been about it...
Myself and GP have a gentlemans agreement. The lack of machines doesn't stop me carrying out a search at least five times a day. Just in the hope that soemthing will turn up that isn't over priced..
Managed to buy my first Coke button today... There is much richer picking over in Europe and maybe we need to go on a road trip one day to bring them back... The trouble with being an Island is that even a trip to France can be an effort in itself... And they drive on the wrong side of the road and don't speak English...
I live most of my dreams by way of the stories of others exploits....
