The machine we have in the shop here is a DN7 selection bubble front. The evaporator is freezing up, including the t-stat probe... I defrosted it this morning, and the compressor came on and I thought all was good. I Just checked it again, and ice is building up again on the evap. Whats going on... the upper fan is running, and the condensor fan is running.. is it just low on freon? It has R134a in it....

Freezing in the corner/top only or the whole coil, top to bottom?

Just freezing on the side where the loops are, and where there is a capilary tube coiled up, I assume (I know) its part of the thermostat. Its kinda hard to tell. I'll try to get a few pics before I try to defrost it tomorrow.

Is the compressor cycling or running continuously? It might be the T-stat if it does not cycle.

No need,
The cap tube, right there where the coil is, is not the thermostat
probe. That is the cap tube itself. The thermostat probe, on a Dixie,
is located along the back edge if the upper shroud. If you are
freezing in that corner, you unit is low. If the unit has the
"snail coil" condenser coil, that's common. I'm not sure why but the
evaporator springs leaks. 80% of the Dixie units I repair are this
type. Add a little 134 and you'll be fine. When it gets worse, give a
hollar!

I have a Dixie Narco that also was leaking on the evaporator end tubing just like Eric stated. Soldered it up, changed drier, pulled vacuum and charged it back up. I'm hoping it won't do it again else where. Jerry

Tom... I believe the compressor is running constantly, but it is not getting cold.
Eric... I think you hit it on the head... its right in the upper corner and the whole suction line is frozen... The cap tube is coiled up and is not part of the t-stat, and it does have that stupid condenser coil.... Is there a repair needed to fix the leak, or is it a mystery leak? Since there are no service fittings, is it better to drain the system and weld in a fitting, or use one of the quick ports? I know those ports suck, but......

In this case, I wouldn't feel too bad using a "clamp" valve. The
evaporator coil usually leaks within the fins themselves. Very hard
to detect, very hard to repair. Sometimes, the leak can be in the
side tube loops and can be repaired. Either way, it requires a
torch and solder. Bump the charge, replace the unit when it gets
bad enough.
