New Coke V Classic

Hi Guys

I'm in the middle of a very good read about the history of Coca Cola. Some great stuff that I had never heard of. Lots about bottlers etc.

Anyway, When the formula was changed Coke eventually has to start selling both the New flavour and the original classic flavour. Is it still possible to get hold of New Coke or has it disappeared altogether??

Is coke still packaged as classic or has that been dropped too.

I've heard rumours 'new Coke' is still being produced, but I have not seen it  in stores (at least in the Detroit area) for several years.

The 20 oz bottle and 12 oz can I have found searching my office both read Coca Cola classic, BUT I  have purchased the 6 oz glass bottles which have Coca Cola (and no 'classic') painted on them

Dave, All I ever see is the coca classic. The history of coke is pretty amazing. At one time, early 50's I think coke almost bought a near bankrupt Pepsi Co. but they didn't want the public to think that  the purchase was because the main competitor had a better product so they were eleminating the competition.

Kilroy - According to my book there were still places in the late 90's that were selling the new Coke just wondered if this was still so today. I vagely remember the whole incident. Clearly didn't make as much of an inpact here as it did in the US. Our Packaging just has Coke on it. No classic.
Was the taste really that different???

Terry - Thanks for thre info about that. I haven't read that bit yet. The book concentrates a great deal on the 70's 80's & 90's. At one time with the Pepsi challenge there wasn't that much in percentage between the two companies. A town called ROME in Georgia is the biggest drinker of Coke per head and Cleveland is the Pepsi stronghold.

Me I'm not really that hung up on whether its Pepsi or Coke. But Coke really is the most recognisable marketting item in the world even more recognisable than your other great son "McDonalds." I did hear that the McDonald motto is that a person should be no more than seven minutes away from a store. We currently have fourin our town with a new one due to open next year.

according to Coke's web site, 'new' Coke was relabeled as Coke II, and dropped in US markets in the early 1990's. The fact the article says it is no longer available in the US makes me think it is being sold elsewhwere in the world.

New Coke had a sweeter taste, without that "Coke Bite'. I was indifferent, but I remember a friend describing it's taste as "3 day old  flat Pepsi".   '>

I thought there were still a few countries that produced Coke II, but I only see Coke Classic listed on the International Coke site.
All of my glass bottles have crowns that say Classic in small lettters.  Also, the new 8 oz. bottles say Classic on them (also in small letters).

I always thought that they they ran the "new coke" in alot of fountains. Some covers were marked "classic" and some were not.
And the taste can vary drastically from fountain to fountain depending on if the owner adjusts it '>

Dave.......you must go back and follow the Coca Cola company from the beginning.
        How the product was invented as a headache cure, but by accidently adding carbonated soda water became our first cola.
        The marketing strategy of this new product should be a textbook example.
        Imagine the world when a restaraunt had no softdrinks?  How did they get people to taste a Coca Cola for the first time?  Coupons were produced and handed out on the streets.  This coupon was to be exchanged at the pharmacy for one cold glass of Coca Cola.  
         They re-invested a lot of their earnings into advertising, which has become so collectible to us today.

Moondawgs right, in the early 1900's the Gov. made coke decide if it was a "soft drink" or a "cure all".  For what it's worth Pepsi was originally called "Brad's Drink".
