Music choices

I see a theme developing here...the dislike of country.

I had buddy who deployed to New Orleans during Katrina, he said that he went into a Wal Mart that had been looted, the only thing left in the store were the country music CDs.

It amazes me that AC/DC, Van Halen, Molley Hatchett and all my old favorites are considered "classic" rock. My kids are enjoying the same stuff that I "rocked out" to in the 70's. I wonder in 25 years if people will even remember Britney S., Jessica S., justin T. and all the overrated "pop" stars of today. probably not!!!

As the saying goes - "Rock and Roll will never die". In an earlier post, I did say I got into country for a while - I did not dig deep into it as it just didn't do it for me. I liked Hank Jr. and Sr., Jerry Jeff Walker, Willie Nelson and Dwight Yoakam alright, but don't own anybody else. I will say this, Hank Jr. is really quite talented. I saw a concert of his once and he jumped around that stage playing every instrument from drums to keyboards, etc. I grew up in Texas and had exposure to a lot of these guys through friends and such. Todays Country music I don't care for. I am with Jim though, I still pretty much listen to the genre of music I loved way back when and have added a few new ones - Pearl Jam, Jet, a little White Stripes. It is healthy to broaden your taste a little.

Jim, My brothers listened to lot of those bands too. I remember them playing some of the early Journey they rocked then. Greg Rollie ruled, I'll always think of him as the singer of "Black Magic Woman" with Santana. Even though his Journey years were great, he still rocks.

So, I owned some Zepplin, Iron Maiden over the years, I still have an Ozzie lp somewhere. Saw Ted Nugent in New Orleans he was great.

Only country I listen to is Tim Mcgraw, thanks to my daughter. She loves him. That should be all of my music interest.

I saw Buck Owen's not to log ago in Bakersfield, Ca. He owns the Crystal Palace in Bakersfield. This is where Garth Brooks proposed to Triesha Yearwood. Buck always has country music stars hanging around. Dwight yocum hangs out here all the time. Did you know that Buck Owens and his family walked all the way to Bakersfield from Texas during the early dust bowl days. Another local boy done good was Merle Haggard, I have quite a few of his songs in one of my Jukeboxes. My Dad used to watch him play at the "Blackboard" before he recorded any music. I also like the old Johnie Cash music. He wrote several of his early songs in (Taft) about and hour from here. He kinda went into hiding, he stayed in a pick up camper with the windows blacked out for several months. He emerged with several new hits!! '>

Greenbaum?  Don't know him.  Was he before the 80's?  
I have seen "One Hit Wonders" and others like "I love The 80's" where they comment on all the music.  Saw a Baltimora video the other day (Tarzan Boy).

I saw Dwight Yoakam here in Phoenix back in the mid-late 80's at a small venue and he really did put on a good show. Buck Owens was a big influence on him and Dwight recorded a couple of songs with him. Buck showed up at the concert I saw and they performed a few songs.
The Man in Black is awesome also - never saw him live but wow what an influential artist. From hillbilly to punk - Mike Ness of Social Distortion is a huge fan of his and does some good covers of his songs. I forgot to mention JC, but for me, there are just way to many musicians to name them all. What comes around goes around - especially in music. My wife is a TV junkie and I listen to music - don't care for Creality TV as I call it.

As far as country music I turn on CMT and don't know any of them....
I like the older country music... maybe not so much the crying in my beer my dog died stuff
but Johnny Cash, Jim Reeves, Marty Robbins, Statlers, Oak Ridge, Alabama, Ronnie Milsap....
All good memories for me...
Then of Course there are my favorites...The Blackwood Brothers, Hovie Lister And the Statesmen Quartet, J.D. Sumner & the Stamps Quartet... All Gone '>

Tell Me please.... When you guys refer to "Rock & Roll" what does it actually mean. In the UK "Rock & Roll" was the stuff from the late 50's to the early 60's. Just before the Beatles hit the scene. I have a feeling R & R in the US has a much broader meaning.

I don't think we, the US, have R&R as a broader meaning, just that it generally started around the late 60's - early 70's... Of which bands you can proudly say came from your neck of the woods, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who just to name a few!
