Old photos

Anyone into old photos? I tell ya.. starting with these soda machines, it has really opened my eyes to older stuff in general. I do have "IT" '>

My neighbor owns a small demolition company. Most of his work is residential and includes ripping out rooms, roofs and general cleanup. Most of his work is in older upper class housing and he comes across all kinds of stuff that people just toss away. From time to time, he brings home some interesting stuff, but doesn't really have a place to display or "use" it. I've already asked him to keep his eye out for anything interesting. He brought me this photo the other night when we unloaded my USS-64. This photo was taken about a mile from where my buddy lives, and I am waiting for a comparison photo of the location now. I love this pic, but I dunno if its cause I know the area and I can relate to it.

I'm in to old local post cards of my county.  It's amazing how many differnt cards were made (I have about 200 different ones so far).  It's also cool to see how the area has changed over the past hundred years and read what people have said about it.  Seems to be about 4 or 5 of us that do this on ebay, and some of the other guys will spend a bunch on a "new" card - I usually have to wait until these guys get a copy of the card before I can afford one (the main competition is the former mayor of my city, who is also a lawyer ($$$$$)!

If you ask my wife I collect way to many things. One which doesn't take up much space is post cards, photos and old matchbooks. Mostly the ones I collect are from my old hometown. but I also collect ones that show old advertising signs or in the case of matchbooks have soda advertising on them.

vend_dr... my wife feels the same way. She still laughs at me for years ago I was collecting Camel cigarette promos. Over the years, my collection has dwindled, but I always liked that stuff.

Here is another old photo my neighbor has that I am trying to ID. I took this pic awhile ago, with a pretty crappy camera. I may do a reshoot with my new camera to get a better shot. I don't know anything about boxing, but I have been trying to ID this boxer with the initials on the shorts. After all the searching I've done, I've kinda settled on the fact its probably a local guy and not a pro. But if anyone knows or has any ideas, let me know.

A few years ago I lived in a converted chapel. The building was over 150 yrs old. I spent many many hours searching for postcards showing the building or the road it was on.

I ended up with seven different pictures some from the very early days of photography. When I sold the home I gave the new owner the pictures. He nearly fell out of his chair.

I suppose to want to live in a place like that you had to appreciate history. He had them blown up and framed. I saw them and they lok fantastic.

There once was a Coca Cola bottling plant 4 blocks from my present store location. Some of the oldtime employees come in to see these old Coke machines and tell me their stories. In the early 60's the squaretop machines came out and each time one was placed in service, the old roundtop was hauled away as a service. In 1966 the building was to be demolished to make way for Jack in the box and Shell gasoline. What did they do with over 100 roundtop machines behind that building? Larry loaded them 10 at a time on his truck and hauled them to the ocean where they were building a rock jetty.
      I have looked for many years for a photo of that building to hang on the wall and show my customers.  I went to the local museum with my inquiry. Two weeks later they called and said they found 3 pictures. I ran back to see them, perfect! I asked how much for each copy?  "What are you going to do with them"? he asked?  WHY?
       He said the museum charges $15.00 per copy for personal use, but $50.00 per copy for buisness use. (Do you think he believes those pictures are still on my kitchen wall )??

Old photos are a lot cheaper than vintage signs, so yeah, I am on the look out for both.

I have 2 great pics of a 1950's city street scene, my plans are to enlarge them, and build window frames around them to get the game room to look like it is 1956.

I tried explaining this to friends of mine, Ithink I scared them....

I took the picture of the Millburn Garage with a 6mp DSLR camera. That was taken through the glass frame. I can do a much better shot of that pic if anyone wants it. I can also do the same with the boxer as well if anyone is interested.

Kilroy.. that sounds cool. I learned from a buddy that works in a camera shop. When they enlarge photos, they have a camera mounted on a tripod, and they take a picture of the picture. Its amazing how you can blow up old pictures that way.

I love looking at old photos, especially streets, buildings, etc. A friend of mine is 78 years old, and he was showing me some pics of where he grew up in PA. I'm going to try to get some of those photos from him and enlarge them.
