Ok, I found my can of rust fix, inhibiter.

Spent an additional hour sanding down rust spots and cleaning.

Sprayed the rust 3 times as directed on the can.

Looks like it's done a good job converting the rust.

next step is reinforcing the holes the rust caused. One bright spot in it all is the hinges are in very good shape. the rust didnt affect them at all. they are strong and tight!!!!

Looks like bondo and paint will be in order for the finish of the lids. ( times like this I really miss Dad he was an expert in auto body work ).

Any input on the finishing is appreciated. I know I've said that before but I really mean it.
