Best R12 substitute now? For 1981 Cavalier 8-64

Hi, Just got a 1981 Cavalier 8-64. It runs continuously and cans at top are 55* and one at bottom 37* set at 8-9 on thermostat. I don't feel any leaks at gaskets. Should this run continuously? What is best freon to top off the r12 TODAY.
I have looked at older posts trying to see what is the best...but so many, R12a, Freeze 12,Frosty Cool 12, R416a , HELP!
