"sand-thru" lettering question

Hi folks,
Anyone here have experience doing the embossed lettering by the "sand through top layer of paint to reveal lower color" method?
I'd like to try it with an Acton cooler that I am cleaning up. Just curious on what grit sandpaper to start and finish with. This is going to be a spray bomb job as I am using the cooler for storage in my truck (can a Honda Element really be called a "truck"?)
'> . I really just want to make it presentable.
Any advice on this method?
Thanks,
Bob

I believe Glen uses this technique with amazing results....somewhere on this Board was his pic of the Pepsi machine embossment and instructions to achieve such a result...eventually:p

I believe the discussion was in the restoration section, last August.
Sandpaper may cut too deep.

I personally haven't attempted this technique, but if you do I would start with very fine wet sandpaper, maybe 1000 - 1500 grit. Do you have anything to sample with before you attempt the restored lettering...?

My six cents,

I don't really have anything to sample with, but if I screw it up I'll just strip it and start over.
Can anyone recommend a good spray bomb "Coke" red?

Hi Bob,
Here's what I know. Old license plates work well for R@D testing. Just get rid of the original reflective paint and it's no big deal to start over and over again. I've sorted out that I do not have any hand lettering skills, roller has fair results. Sand through works best but you must be very very carefull.
I really don't know how the embossing was painted from the factory.
MoonDawg is right we rattled this one awhile back :-)
