Will paint stick to powder coating?

This is slightly off of the topic of soda machines. But I work as an arcade technition while I am waiting to be hired by the FAA. At the arcade we have the old ROWE change machines that are powdercoated brown and the front is woodgrain just like the 70's soda machines. These machines are in great shape but they look terrible. The owners want me to repaint the machines for them. My only problem is that I am not sure if paint will stick to the powdercoating. The finish is the rough texture powdercoating. Please help.

Josh,
Try a test spot on the back. I would hit it with a D.A. sander using 80 grit, apply poly primer and block it out with wet 400 grit. Just a thought! Terry

Josh,
Liquid paint will adhere to powder coating. My VF-117 that is now in primer was primed using what my shop calls "powdercoat primer". They use it as a base for whatever other powder they are going to use as a final coat. So, that being said. All my VF is waiting for is final paint. I was kida aprehensive about having the primer done this way until Dave, my painter, showed me some final products for other customers. Everything looked great.
I know that the coating you are talking about is a final coat but liquid paint should adhere the same to it as the powder primer. I will however give Dave a call and ask him about that for you.

Thank you so much brian. This stuff just seems like it is too hard and shiny for paint to stick to.

Josh,
Yeah, that's what I though too. When my paint said he was gonna use powder coat primer I almost freaked out on him!
But he reassured me that it was completely safe and would look great. So, I did call him right after my last post and he AGAIN (probably getting tired of my questions but...)reassured me that it was all good!
