Here we go again

I have a vendo 39 and the compressor is gone again ,2nd time in 4 years. I was wondering if i can get some input on what to do next. The last 2 original compressors iv'e bought has only lasted 2 years and im trying to decide should i go original again or should i go new? The reason i went original the last time is because the machine is in my theater room and was told the new ones are twice as loud. Can anyone who has had both give me there opinion. Also i live in Canada and finding a original costs me the same as a new one with exchange ,shipping, duty....Thanks input is greatly appreciated

Hello,   The following is a frank statement..

So you’ve  replaced a +60 year compressor  with another +60 year old cinder block & now you’re even considering the same mistake again?  ( a definition of insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly & expecting different results)

Spray paint does NOT restore a compressor.

Do yourself a favor bite the bullet & replace it already & have your deck restored with a new compressor have it converted to R134 & you’ll be a lot happier in the long run.

Yes, the new style “ tin can” hermetic compressors can be louder than the older sealed units, basically it’s just a matter of mass, the old compressor cases were thick ( up to 1/8”) rolled steel & the manufacturers went through a lot more vibration isolation with the internal guts, one thing you’d need to do is always use new rubber isolators on the mounting bolts & don’t crush them too tightly the compressor should “ float “ on the rubber feet.

Another mistake is to use too large of a condensor fan ( or evaporator fan) motor ( higher wattage) a 9 watt is quite a bit louder than a 4 watt due to its higher tourqe ( the more watts = more torque to spin a larger diameter fan blade). The larger motor will set the blades & base-plate “thrumming” if you go too big,   a 4-watt motor will spin up to a 8-10” diameter blade) I also prefer the old style 3-blade fans because they have a wider angle to help scoop up the air to move it without “ whipping “ it around, but sometimes you just don’t have enough clearance between the motor & the coils to substitute a 3 blade  for a five bladed unit..

If someone has an all original machine and wants to keep it that way, Can the original compressors be rebuilt, or are the sealed units just toast at that point?

Not unless it’s a belt-driven model like a York or Copland, once apon a time I recall Eric at Global was able to lathe open some old sealed models like a Westinghouses but in a nutshell, no, it’s not worth the time or cost, & where are you gonna find a rebuild kit anyway... these machines aren’t number-matching collectable cars, they’re vending machines, original parts don’t mean sqat if the dang thing doesn’t work.
