Josh, what do you think? 8watts would be just fine? Won't get too hot for that small space and plastic?

Hello I made my first posting a little bit ago. I thought I had my problem fixed but......when I replaced the light in my cavalier 80 within a minute I got a nice liitle spark and a pop and the whole machine shut down. Is there maybe a fuse or something? This machine has worked perfectly for the 5 years I have had it.Can someone please help?

Sorrry guys it was a false alarm my machine is working now when I got the spark it blew the circuit and all I had to do is reset the breaker. I panicked and didnt think clearly. I still need to replace my light bulb though. Is it possile that the 8 watt bulb instead of the 3 watt bulb caused this? Also I have a tech quetion about this site. How do you post pictures? To post a photo, when you add a reply use the "browse" button to locate the photo and select the one you want. That will attach it to your post. Note there is a file size limit.
As for the bulb, somebody with more knowledge might shed more light (...oops sorry) on the subject. Just quickly though by using the "wrong" wattage bulb you change the resistance and thusly the current. For example"
If you use a 8 watt bulb you get 1650 ohms
if you use a 3 watt bulb you get 4400 ohms
R = E (squared) / P
where R = resistance
where E = voltage
Where P = power in watts
Then to calculate amperage it is I = E*R
Where I = amperage
Where E = voltage
Where R = resistance
This translates into an amperage of .07 in the 8 watt bulb
and amperage of .02 amps with the 3 watt bulb. I am not sure how "robust" those old ballasts are. I would not worry about the heat of a Flourescent bulb.

Jeff, your ballast is bad and blew the old bulb. Whenever buying a bulb for these old machines, it's a good idea to replace the ballast too. They cost about the same $5-$10 ea.
